NASCAR’s current playoff format, which was introduced in 2014, has received a lot of criticism over the years. The winner-takes-it-all format has helped many drivers turn around a poor season into a championship-winning performance.
However, many have still openly criticized this format and called for changes to it over the years. Now, Brad Keselowski has weighed in on the current playoff format and how it is doing more harm than good for the sport.
Brad Keselowski suffered from a rollercoaster of a performance this season. The RFK Racing star was unable to even clinch his spot in the playoffs owing to a poor performance since the beginning of the year. As such, amid massive criticism of the playoff system, Keselowski joined the bandwagon as well. He too criticized the winner-takes-it-all format and called for changes to it.
NASCAR has reportedly opened up discussions for changing the playoff format for the 2026 season, primarily the 3-3-4 format. Regardless, many people in the community still want the sport to revert to the previous championship format that was followed before 2014.
In a recent tweet on X, Keselowski put forth his honest opinions and how even the media coverage was messing up due to a poor playoff format. Brad Keselowski insisted that the media was more focused on covering drivers who were eliminated rather than the race winners and MVPs.
Keselowski further explained that even the fans were now tired of the inconsistent broadcasting of the sport and would much rather watch something else. As such, the RFK Racing star declared that NASCAR was suffering from a net loss in the entire matter and had to change the playoff format currently.
Clear as day, Not enough talk about winning and winners (star power) but covering 15th for known elimination is easier for media storylines. Fans are voting with their eyeballs and it’s definitively a Net loss for the sport vs full season format. Now is the time to fix this.

Joey Logano opposes Brad Keselowski’s stance on the playoff format
Even though there are seemingly more critics of NASCAR’s current playoff format, there are many who still love the winner-takes-it-all format. Among the many, the defending Cup Series champion, Joey Logano, isn’t completely against the current format. As such, Logano does a 180 on Brad Keselowski’s comments and speaks out with his blunt opinion on the matter.

Joey Logano highlighted that the current playoff format created drama, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Logano continued that this format created storylines, awesome moments, and many other fun conditions.
Because of this, the three-time champion insisted that he did not understand why people were so wholly against the current playoff format. The 35-year-old mentioned that he did not side with the current format only because it helped Team Penske a lot, but the fact at hand was true.
The playoffs create drama, It creates storylines. It creates awesome moments like that. I don’t understand what people don’t like about it. I really don’t get it. I preach that all the time. I’m not just saying that because it works for us. I’m saying it because it’s true.
Joey Logano said in a post-race interview, @_TaylorKitchen_/X
Despite the back and forth on the status quo, NASCAR has continued to grow and evolve in terms of global viewership and engagement. Although the current format seems to do just fine, the sport must bring about changes and listen to driver feedback. For now, the 2025 season playoffs will be interesting to witness as Brad Keselowski prepares for a better outing in the coming season.
