Carlos Sainz has been the closest driver to the Red Bull duo so far this season, and fans expected him to be the savior amidst the Austrian giant and Max Verstappen‘s domination. However, his Chinese Grand Prix weekend has gone from bad to worse as he spun his Ferrari SF-24 on the final corner in Q2 and collided with the barriers.
Carlos Sainz would have hoped for a strong outing during the Chinese GP Sprint race and continued his trend of successive podiums in the last few races. However, to his dismay, the Sprint race did not go as planned for him, he made contact with his teammate, Charles Leclerc, leaving a sour taste between the Scarlet duo.
Sainz ended his 19-lap Sprint race outing in fifth place. During the main Grand Prix qualifying session, he spun around his car while completing his push lap during Q2.
The 29-year-old aimed to make the most out of qualifying for the race on Sunday. But in a consequential turn of events, he took a bit more risk exiting the last turn and fell prey to the gravel trap on the outside of the corner. This slingshotted Sainz across the track and into the barriers causing a red flag.
Carlos Sainz apologized after crashing the car
After the crash, Sainz’s Ferrari came to an abrupt halt and it appeared that he would have had to retire from the session. Reckoning the inevitable reality and filled with guilt, the Spaniard apologized to the team for his blunder.

Carlos Sainz added the following via his Ferrari team radio.
The 29-year-old said, “Sorry guys” on the team radio while facing in the wrong direction. Subsequently, he indulged in restarting the engine with the help of the MGU-K and limped back to the Scarlet garage.
Fortunately, the Spaniard was able to get back in the session and made it through Q2. Eventually, he pushed on to claim seventh on the grid for tomorrow’s race, just behind the gearbox of his Monegasque teammate. Keeping everything in view, fireworks will most definitely go off during the 53-lap Chinese GP.
