Christian Horner has shared his opinion on Oscar Piastri‘s title chances in the 2026 season. Piastri lost out on the 2025 championship following multiple disappointing circumstances. The Aussie was put at a disadvantage by McLaren and ultimately lost the championship to Lando Norris by just 13 points. Now, Horner believes that the coming season might give the 24-year-old a chance to redeem himself.
Amid rumors of Christian Horner considering a return to Formula 1 in a bigger role than a team principal, the 52-year-old has opened up about Oscar Piastri‘s title chances in 2026. Piastri was no stranger to making mistakes over the year, as his late-season blunders caused him to ultimately lose the championship.
As such, Christian Horner highlighted that Oscar Piastri certainly would have learnt a lot after committing the mistakes in the 2025 season. Horner recalled that the Aussie was the title favorite going into the summer break. However, a string of woeful results after returning from the break caused him to lose massive ground in the title standings and ultimately lose the title.
Christian Horner pointed out that everything fell apart for Oscar Pisatri towards the end of the 2025 season. Regardless, Horner was sure that the Aussie would take in great learning from the mistake, as it would have hurt him a lot. The former Red Bull team principal reckoned that the woes of the previous year would motivate him to perform even better and push for more success under the new regulations.
Oscar will have learned a huge amount from last year, I thought he was odds-on favourite going into the [2025] summer break, and unfortunately, it sort of fell apart for him at the end of the season. But he will learn from that, and it will have hurt him and ultimately motivated him.
Christian Horner told Australia’s Today.
Christian Horner Pushes Back on Power Unit Loophole Rumors Involving Red Bull and Mercedes
Ahead of the beginning of the 2026 season, Mercedes and Red Bull were accused of using a borderline illegal trick with the compression ratio that helped them gain extra power. However, Toto Wolff was having none of these claims and rejected them. Even Christian Horner believes that the teams are not at fault, and that finding such legal loopholes is the very essence of Formula 1.

Christian Horner highlighted that Formula 1 had always been about pushing the boundaries. He continued that teams that were conservative with such matters were never able to come out on top. As such, the teams needed to ‘push the envelope’ to extract the maximum performance from their challengers. Horner reckoned that it all depended on how the teams and engineers interpreted the regulations and tried to maximize performance.
Formula 1 is about pushing the boundaries. It’s about how you interpret regulations. Always has been, always will be, Teams that are the most conservative are the teams that are never at the front of the grid. You’ve got to be pushing the envelope. And of course, it’s all about how you interpret regulations, and engineers, will be looking at those regulations and thinking, ‘OK, how can I maximise performance?’
Christian Horner noted.
The 2026 season will remain highly exciting as all teams will start the year afresh following the regulation changes. None of the team seem to be the clear favorite for now, as they prepare for the pre-season test in Bahrain. Christian Horner has been out of the sport for quite some time now, and his return to the grid will definitely be interesting, if he decides to return.
