Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell have been dominating the F1 headlines for all the wrong reasons since the Qatar GP. The former came up with a scathing verbal attack following the Qatar event, and in light of this, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has also sided with his driver.

The four-time world champion was given a 1-place grid drop penalty for driving unnecessarily slowly during the Lusail qualifying. This blocked George Russell‘s final push lap, and following Saturday’s driver press conference, Verstappen was furious at the Brit for getting him a penalty.

Yesterday’s penalty was more based on hysterics from George, who has been quite hysterical this weekend. There was a little bit of gamesmanship going on in that.

The Verstappen-Russell saga is going to carry forward into this week’s event, the Abu Dhabi GP. Both drivers will be bombarded with questions about the Dutchman’s remarks following the culmination of the Qatar race weekend.

Red Bull holds Sergio Perez in the ‘highest regard’ despite woeful performances

While Max Verstappen and George Russell have been having their off-track tussle, Christian Horner has to make an extremely tough decision following the Abu Dhabi GP. Sergio Perez‘s Red Bull seat is under huge threat for the 2025 F1 season.

The 51-year-old Horner was pushed in Qatar to talk about the same, and he had the following to add.

The World Championship that Max achieved in ‘21, the Constructors’ World Championships in ‘22 and ‘23. Obviously, this year has been particularly hard. He’s won five Grands Prix for us. He’s had some outstanding performances in races like Singapore, Azerbaijan, and Saudi Arabia, to name a few. Everybody holds Checo in the highest regard and respect, but the situation that we’re in is as painful for him as it is for the team.

The 34-year-old has had an extremely horrendous 2024 F1 season for the Milton-Keynes-based team. He has been nowhere near the level of his four-time world-champion teammate and is one of the main reasons why Red Bull is out of the running for the coveted constructors’ championship.

Going into the upcoming Abu Dhabi weekend, quite a few eyes will be glued on Verstappen, Russell, and Perez for varied reasons. Moreover, all the drama could lead to some real fireworks in the final race of the 2024 F1 season at the Yas Marina Circuit.
