The FIA has warned engine manufacturers that the deadline for making changes to the F1 2026 power units has already passed. The sports governing body has indicated that it might be too late to tweak the engine and teams must proceed with the current plan, Christian Horner expressed his opinion in support of FIA.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner supports the FIA’s decision on the 2026 Formula One rules. The Briton indirectly hinted that it was Toto Wolff’s Mercedes is among those who resist changes. However, it’s upto FIA and it’s never too late to make improvements.

There is always one that doesn't want to change, but that is down to the FIA. It is never too late.

Toto Wolff claims the ‘ship has sailed’ on making improvements for 2026 power unit

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff explained that the window for altering the 2026 engine rules has closed, saying it’s too late to reconsider. Wolff acknowledged that some teams find themselves in a disadvantage due to missing the opportunity for adjustments. While others believe they have improved a lot within the existing rules and this kind of debate usually happens when setting up the rules.

There are teams that feel they are on the back foot, and there are other teams that will feel, and OEMs, that they have done a good job. That's the normal kind of wrestling on regulations.

Further Wolff admitted that there are still opportunities to make quality improvements to the chassis to boost car’s performance during races. However, the Austrian billionaire reckoned when it comes to fixing the engine, plans and decision are already too far long. As such, significant changes can’t be made to the 2026 F1 ruleset now.

I think on the chassis side there are tweaks that are possible that we need to do. But, on the engine side, the process is far too advanced.
Toto Wolff said

Certainly, Toto Wolff believes now it’s time for teams to focus on optimizing other aspects of the car’s design and performance within the existing engine specification. F1 fans would be hoping to witness some exciting racing once the new regulations come in place at the start of the 2026 season.
