Sergio Perez will continue racing for Red Bull Racing at least for the remainder of the 2024 season. The Mexican driver had signed a contract extension with Milton Keynes recently. However, the Austrian team was still unsure over Checo’s future. Now, Christian Horner opened up about the team’s frustrations over Perez.
The Mexican driver had a decent start to the season and seemed to be right behind Max Verstappen. However, as rivals caught up with Red Bull, Sergio Perez dropped down the pecking order. Checo has only scored 28 points in the last eight races, a massive blow to the team in the standings.
Nevertheless, Christian Horner recently confirmed that Perez is set to continue alongside Max Verstappen. The Red Bull team boss admitted that everyone at Milton Keynes has been frustrated by Checo’s struggles. Horner highlighted that no one in the team wanted to see Sergio Perez fail to deliver.
What's frustrating for everybody is Checo struggling because nobody wants to see him struggle.Christian Horner said, as reported by Motorsport.com
Christian Horner claims Red Bull wants Sergio Perez to succeed
Sergio Perez will get some breathing room following this decision. The 34-year-old can finally shift focus completely on his driving without any external pressure from the media or the Red Bull leadership. Christian Horner asserted that everyone was supporting Perez. As the entire Milton Keynes-based squad wants to see him succeed.
The team has been and is right behind him. Everybody wants to see him succeed, because it hurts seeing him in the situation that he is in.Christian Horner stated
Certainly, Sergio Perez has run out of excuses to perform. The Mexican driver must hit the ground running after the summer break and deliver consistent results alongside Verstappen. Red Bull has made a gamble by retaining Checo. As such, it now depends on Perez to prove himself and show the Austrian team that it made the right decision.
