Sergio Perez‘s woes in the mighty RB20 do not seem to end anytime soon. Barring the initial few events, he has fallen massively behind his teammate Max Verstappen, and after ending the recent Austrian GP qualifying in P8, Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner has given his verdict.
As per the Brit, Sergio Perez is under pressure to start delivering solid results for Red Bull. Moreover, he feels that the pressure is not only from within the team but also because of the media, and the kind of questions they ask regularly.
Horner was asked about Perez’s woes after Austria quali and he had the following to add.
Checo knows it's a pressure in this business and the scrutiny that there is particularly in the other car that is winning a lot of races, and performing with the other driver the way it is, that's F1 and the pressure just naturally exists on any teammate who's under-delivering and then the media asking questions, it's easy to lose your head.Christian Horner via Sky Sports F1
The six-time Grand Prix winner has been making his trade with the Milton-Keynes-based team since 2021. Perez has always proved second best and with his 2024 going from bad to worse, Horner has not denied that the Mexican is under immense pressure.
Red Bull is hoping for Sergio Perez to ‘bounce back’
While Horner has admitted that Perez is under pressure because of under-delivering against Max Verstappen, the former has also showcased hope. The Brit feels his Mexican driver will bounce back from his troubles like he has done in the past.
In the recent Austria Sprint race, the 34-year-old managed to amass only a single point.
What I've been impressed with Checo over the last four years, is whenever the pressure is really been on, he's always able to bounce back.Christian Horner said in the same interview
Sergio Perez is starting today’s Austrian GP from eighth place on the grid behind the lights of Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc. If Perez is to amass a podium, he’ll have no option but to make daring moves during the early few skirmishes of the 71-lap race. Once the race will settle down, it will be hard to make overtakes around the free-flowing Red Bull Ring.
