Four times F1 world champion Max Verstappen has found himself in the middle controversy over the 2026 regulations. He has been critical of the new cars and has recently made multiple threats hinting at retirement, if the rules are not adjusted. These public complaints haven’t sat well with many in the racing community.
Ex-F1 champion Damon Hill is the most recent figure to call out the Dutchman over the threats. He has given an ultimatum to the Red Bull driver, telling him to stop racing in F1 if he doesn’t wont to. He highlighted that the veteran racer needs a break as he reminded the No:3 driver that he is not obliged to race always in the sport.
I think if you’re not happy doing something, you should stop and do something else. You’re not obliged to do it. You’re not obliged to do it. Max doesn’t have to do this. He’s a new dad as well, and he’s been doing it for a long time. There does come a point where the chewing gum loses its flavour a bit. Maybe he needs a break.
Damon Hill told BBC.
Further talking about the point, Damon Hill highlighted if Max Verstappen is playing politics, using his soft power to force a rule change, it isn’t going to work. He doesn’t expect F1 to listen to the veteran racer because of the threats and remined the racer that he can’t always get what her wanted in life, especially in a sport like F1.
If he’s saying this in order to get some leverage on the way things are at the moment, I don’t think that will work. I think that approach … people will just say ‘Max, go away, come back when you’ve had a think about it.’ You can’t always get what you want.

Max Verstappen asked fans to stop feeling sorry about him
After his most recent disappointing run at the Japanese Grand Prix, Max Verstappen talked to the fans that has been worried about him. He highlighted how he is keeping him busy with other ventures such as GT3, something he is continue beyond his F1 years.

I have a lot of other projects anyway that I have a lot of passion about. The GT3 racing. Not only racing it myself, but also the team. It’s really nice and fun to build that. And I really want to build that out further in the coming years.
Max Verstappen said.
Furthermore, the Red Bull racer admitted that he will not stop racing and having fun anytime soon. The champion racer told the fans to not feel sorry about him, despite the fact that he is feeling sad about how his car hasn’t met the standard this year so far.
It’s not like if I would stop here that I’m not going to do anything. I’m always going to have fun. And also, I will have fun in a lot of other things in my life. But it’s a bit sad to be honest that we’re even talking about this. It is what it is. You don’t need to feel sorry for me. I’ll be fine.
Max Verstappen added.
There are a lot of uncertainty over Verstappen’s future and the veteran retiring over the regulations will be a massive loss for the sport. It will also ruin the legacy of the racer, as in the long-run fans won’t be kind to the racer who quits because he didn’t like the cars, as the drivers are supposed win surpassing all the challenges.
