Lando Norris enters the 2026 season as the defending driver’s champion following his mere two-point title win over Max Verstappen in 2025. The Briton will face a stiff challenge from the likes of Oscar Piastri, Verstappen, and many others in the coming season. However, amid the doubts surrounding Norris’ ability to keep winning championships, the 1996 F1 champion Damon Hill has backed the former.

Throughout the 2025 season, Lando Norris suffered from massive ups and downs. The Briton seemingly lost the driver’s title at one point in the season, but a performance resurgence helped him clinch the lead. Despite his performance improvement, he remained one of the more hated drivers on the grid. Many people even commented that the 2025 title win would be a one-off for Norris, with no other title wins incoming for him.

However, Damon Hill begs to differ with his opinions. Firstly, Hill insisted that Lando Norris would certainly get some comfort following his first title win in Formula 1 after so many years. Hill believes that the 26-year-old would be able to relax for some time. Still, Norris would certainly want to get back in the game and keep up with his title-winning streak in the coming season.

Damin Hill recalled Michael Schumacher‘s championship victory arc in Formula 1. The German won five championships but still had the performance in him to win a grand total of seven titles. Similarly, Lando Norris’ 2025 win might push him towards wanting more success in the sport. As such, Hill insisted that the reigning F1 champion got three or four more title wins in his.

He’s done it and there’s a lot of comfort that comes from that, He will be able to, to some degree, relax. It’s a question of the amount of avarice you have to win. I always thought when Michael won one, two, three, four, five championships, he’d had enough, but then he went on to win one or two more. Some people, it propels them to go on to win multiple championships. I definitely think Lando’s got more than one in him. I think he’s probably got three or four.

Damon Hill reveals ‘strong pairing’ of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri was one of the closest contenders for the 2025 F1 title against Lando Norris. Piastri had the title win in his bag upto a certain point in the season. However, a mysterious slump caused him to lose it in the end. Still, the two Papaya drivers will go head-to-head once again in the coming season and fight for the championship. Damon Hill pointed out that Norris and Piastri formed a great pair and were capable of maximizing results for McLaren.

Damon Hill raised the question if Oscar Piastri would give a stiff challenge to Lando Norris on track in 2026. The 1996 F1 champion recalled that the Aussie certainly did not underperform in his year against Norris in 2025. Hill pointed out that Piastri will take a look back and patch the holes in his performances. Additionally, Max Verstappen will always be a deciding factor in the equation as he can never be counted out of the title battle.

The question is, will Oscar, because he’s in the same team with Oscar, and Oscar did not exactly underperform. There were moments when he dropped out last year. He will go through the winter and think, ‘OK, what do I have to do to patch up those little holes in my performance?’ They’ve both been through a title fight with themselves and Max at the end. They will have learned massively from that.

Damon Hill noted.

McLaren emerged victorious in the constructors’ championship in 2025 without a stern battle from the rivals. The team won their second consecutive title and hopes to keep up with the winning pace. However, none of the teams seems to be the clear favorite for 2026, as the new regulations will certainly shake things up.
