After Red Bull announced that Adrian Newey and the Austrian giant would be parting ways, rumors flooded the paddock regarding where the design wizard would be headed. While most reckoned that the 65-year-old would move to Ferrari, Newey had other plans. Subsequently, ex-F1 team owner and Newey’s manager Eddie Jordan gave in on how they kept the Aston Martin move a secret.

Adrian Newey is regarded as the greatest F1 car designer of all time. The Briton’s designs have won 26 world championships, with Max Verstappen winning the latest drivers’ championship in the RB20. On the other hand, with his Red Bull departure becoming imminent, teams pooled in to tempt the design genius into their motorhome.

Despite efforts from various teams, Newey was given a massive deal from Aston Martin. After both parties had agreed to the contract details, the confidentiality of the move was kept a secret.

Due to the contractual restrictions with Red Bull, he had to delay the announcement. So, the Briton and Eddie Jordan had to employ drastic measures to avoid accidentally spilling the tea on the switch, as the 76-year-old explained.

Adrian was very united as well. We used to speak a lot with regards, don’t come near me. Don’t say anything. Don’t do this. He played a great game.

Eddie Jordan said on Formula For Success podcast

Newey is expected to join the Silverstone-based outfit in early Q1 of 2025. He is currently under gardening leave by the Austrian giant and cannot join the workforce of any other team over the winter break to respect his previous contract.

David Coulthard reflects on Adrian Newey’s exit from Red Bull

Though Red Bull seems confident that it would be able to make a championship-winning car without the aid of Newey, members of the Red Bull family are not certain. This includes ex-Red Bull driver and brand ambassador David Coulthard, a veteran of the sport.

Furthermore, Coulthard admitted that the move was uncomfortable for him to unfold before his eyes. A switch, that is expected to hinder the Austrian outfit’s results going ahead.

Although it was uncomfortable for me to observe the leaving of Red Bull and the joining of Aston with Adrian, professionally, he must be feeling pretty successful.

On the other hand, Aston Martin would be waiting eagerly for Newey’s arrival. The English team would have a world-championship-level driver and designer, making Aston Martin a force to be reckoned with in the F1 world as the 2026 regulation change starts to dawn upon the teams.
