Former Dutch racer Tom Coronel has criticized Sergio Perez for his poor run of form this season. Perez has secured only 144 points, with his last podium finish coming at the Chinese Grand Prix back in April.

Sergio Perez‘s form has cost the Milton-Keynes-based team greatly in the constructors’ championship. They now trail to a powerful McLaren side by 41 points. On the other hand, Max Verstappen has single-handedly driven Red Bull throughout the season and leads the drivers’ championship as well.

Tom Coronel has thus, bashed the Mexican for being inconsistent to the team. Coronel believes that Ferrari and McLaren might ultimately finish higher than the Milton-Keynes outfit in the title race this year.

They (Ferrari) have two drivers who score consistently. Of course, that’s what you need. We see that with McLaren too and that’s why Red Bull has already lost that battle. But indeed, Ferrari has two strong drivers. That’s a bit what Red Bull is missing at the moment. They have one strong driver and one who is a second, water carrier, supporter or whatever you want to call it. That’s where it goes wrong.

Perez signed a contract extension with Red Bull earlier this year, which now makes him stay with the team until the end of 2026. He must, however, perform well to avoid the risk of getting sacked due to poor results.

Sergio Perez admits not wishing to continue racing for long in F1

Being a Formula 1 driver is one of the most hectic jobs in the world. Aside from the glamour and exhilaration, there are long hours of training, and months of travel, which require a lot of sacrifice from the driver’s end.

For now I have two more years on my contract, and two years in F1 is a long time, but I know that the end is getting closer. I don’t see myself running here like Fernando Alonso, for example, whom I admire a lot for everything he does at his age. It’s not that I wouldn’t like to, but because I have small children and I want to spend a lot more time with them. At the end of the day, they will be the limit.

Sergio Perez spoke to DAZN

Sergio Perez has talked of retirement given his responsibilities and attachment outside the world of Formula 1. The 34-year-old wishes to spend more time in order to cater to the needs of family and his kids.

Several drivers have chosen to retire for similar reasons in the past as well. Nevertheless, Perez must, for the time being, perform to the best of his abilities to establish a glorious legacy before retirement.
