Former Dutch motorsports racer Geido van Der Garde has backed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to win the Drivers’ Championship this season. Verstappen is currently the reigning world champion, leading the title race by 59 points this year as well.

Despite amassing the most wins of all, Max Verstappen has been fairly lackluster in his recent performances this season. He has failed to win any of the last seven races, which has caused concern amongst many about his title chances.

Van Der Garde has, however, deemed Verstappen’s experience to be the differentiating factor in winning the title. The Dutch driver spoke highly of his compatriot’s winning mentality as well.

Max is going to be the world champion. He is obviously going to pull out all the stops. If there is no more in it than there is in it now, he will become the world champion purely on mentality. He has experience. He knows how to win the title.
Giedo van Der Garde said on DRS The Race Show podcast

The three-time world champion will now have to desperately notch wins and podiums in order to preserve his lead. The upcoming races will therefore be nothing short of a finale for him as he tries to clinch his fourth career title.

Former world championship claims Red Bull’s struggles have changed Max Verstappen

Canadian racer Jacques Villeneuve has shared his thoughts on Red Bull’s poor run of form this season. The Milton Keynes-based team has lost their lead in the Constructors’ Championship to McLaren at the Azerbaijan GP.

Max for the last few races sounds downbeat. He’s not even feisty in the race and doesn’t fight that hard. Even on the radio, we barely hear him. Something has changed. He knows the car isn’t driving as he wants and his team-mate was a lot quicker than him.
Jacques Villeneuve told Sky F1

Villeneuve claimed that Verstappen has lost his mojo in light of his winless spell in Formula 1 this season. The Canadian said that the 26-year-old is no longer his usual vocal self even on the radio during crucial moments of a race.

The RB20 has been persistently overcome with issues on tracks, especially with kerbs and bumps, this season. Red Bull have made their best efforts but have come up short in resolving the issues so far. They will now have to put their heads together to find a fix if they wish to retain their title this year.
