The Ex-F1 driver turned presenter Karun Chandhok has backed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in his protest against the FIA. Verstappen opposed the governing body after being reprimanded for swearing during the Singapore GP press conference.

Max Verstappen has been vocal and transparent with his choices and emotions ever since his debut in Formula 1. He has often used colorful language to depict his thoughts in a more specific manner. This gesture is, however, thoroughly disapproved by the FIA as a part of their code of conduct.

Karun Chandhok has thereafter claimed that the pinnacle of motorsport requires drivers with character and emotions. He has since deemed the penalties by the FIA as harsh in response to this agenda.

Penalising them for speaking when they’re emotional just feels a little bit harsh. We want to see characters. We don’t want to see robots. We want to see them wear their heart on their sleeves.

Verstappen refused to answer any questions during the post-race conference in Singapore as a part of his protest. He has also showcased complete defiance of the FIA’s rules by not agreeing to serve community service as a part of his punishment.

Max Verstappen admits Red Bull went in the wrong direction this season

Hopefully we can continue to make good steps from here[Singapore GP]. In the beginning [of the season] I was surprised as well, but if you look at what our problems were, then I fully understand it. At some point, we have gone in the wrong direction. The other teams have either not faced that particular point yet or they developed the car in a slightly different way. That is always difficult to assess.

Max Verstappen told AUTOSPORT

Verstappen has said that the Milton-Keynes team’s unorthodox approach was the reason behind their downfall in 2024. The 26-year-old then claimed that the problems have now been assessed and worked upon by the team.

The Dutchman has performed tirelessly for Red Bull throughout the season. His brilliance has single-handedly salvaged the squad on numerous occasions. The team therefore has the responsibility of providing him with a better car ahead of Austin this month.
