Fernando Alonso is one of the most successful and experienced drivers on the grid, with two world championships to his name. However, the 42-year-old has not been menacing on the grid this season and is yet to score a single podium.
Aston Martin was a force to be reckoned with at the start of the 2023 campaign, actively challenging Red Bull for wins and podiums. But the Silverstone-based team has fallen off greatly this year and is struggling to notch up points while standing fifth in the championship.
Fernando Alonso has spoken highly of his abilities despite being on the receiving end of a scrutinizing run this season. Alonso has claimed to be capable of putting up a fight with the right equipment, even if he is not 100% faster than the others.
I think, 20 years later, some of those goals were achieved with the championships. I can still achieve good things when I have the right equipment. Even when the car is not 100 per cent, they still need to keep an eye on me. I will always be a fighter. I didn’t change my approach.Fernando Alonso via FINANCIAL TIMES
Alonso has been competing in F1 since 2001. He is contracted to Aston Martin until the end of 2026 and thus, the ongoing campaign and the upcoming years hold tremendous significance for him as far as his aspirations in the sport are concerned.
Fernando Alonso was delighted after double-point finish at Silverstone
Aston Martin finished P7 and P8 at the British Grand Prix, a good result for the team after a lackluster spell this season. Fernando Alonso praised the team for their resilience and hard work after the race at Silverstone.
Yeah, definitely. With both cars [scoring] points, I think it’s never easy – you can have a DNF, you can crash, you can make a big mistake on the tyre choice, all this kind of thing. So to execute the race more or less trouble-free is already a success.Fernando Alonso via F1
The 42-year-old Spaniard claimed that the team identified some issues after their performances at Spielberg and Barcelona and was keen on fixing them ahead of their home race. Alonso has also asserted that the Silverstone-based unit properly executed the race for a trouble-free outing at Silverstone.
As mentioned above, Aston Martin currently stands fifth in the championship with only 68 points and will have to work harder to achieve a turnaround this season. But a convincing result at their home race is sure to get things going. Alonso and Co. will now look to carry forward their form into the upcoming races.
