Fernando Alonso is considered one of the greatest drivers in F1’s recent history. Yet, the last time Alonso won a world title was way back in 2006 with Renault. Poor luck and wrong career moves stripped the Spaniard away of any chances of winning the championship in the past decade. However, things might change for the two-time world champion in 2026.

Alonso last won a race in 2013 with Ferrari. The 43-year-old spent the last decade struggling in the midfield and even took a brief hiatus from the sport. Although, Fernando Alonso did take multiple podiums with Aston Martin in early 2023.

2024 and 2025 set to be a difficult period for the Silverstone-based squad as it undergoes a major overhaul. However, the 2026 F1 rule change is the team’s target to become a title contender. As such, Fernando Alonso could see himself win at the pinnacle of motorsport again.

Lawrence Stroll’s team will become a Honda works team in 2026, allowing the chassis to be well integrated with the power units. This could bring in a pace advantage of around half a second per lap. Aston Martin has invested heavily in a new factory in the past couple of years to facilitate its expansion.

Moreover, the Silverstone squad has already poached in various big names from different teams. However, F1 aero genius Adrian Newey‘s rumored move to Aston Martin now seems imminent with a reported $200 million deal.

As such, Aston Martin seems to be getting everything a team needs to win in F1. Fernando Alonso would be 45 years old in 2026. However, the two-time world champion has shown time and time again that his age has not impacted his performance one bit.

On the other hand, it will still be an uphill battle for Alonso and Aston Martin as they fight against the well-established top three teams. It is likely that the Silverstone squad will make a few mistakes if it does find itself in title contention. Nevertheless, 2026 could be Fernando Alonso’s best shot at winning a third world title in over a decade.
