Aston Martin is undergoing a period of significant transformation. The team has scrubbed through three team principals in the past three years. Now, for the 2026 season, the Silverstone-based constructor has appointed the aero-genius Adrian Newey as the Team Principal, replacing Andy Cowell. Though this move has received mixed opinions so far, F1 veteran Fernando Alonso shares his honest opinion on the matter.
Fernando Alonso has been racing at Aston Martin for a couple of years now. The Asturian had great hopes to achieve his 33rd victory in the sport, if not a third championship win. However, the team suffered from a desperate performance slump ever since the 2023 season. Now, Adrian Newey‘s entry meant that the team expected great results to come in the near future.
Adrian Newey will now lead the green outfit from the 2026 season as not only a technical developer, but a Team Principal. Speaking on the recent move, Fernando Alonso noted that Newey was managing not only the technical aspect of the car, but in a way, the entire team. The Englishman took care of the people in the team and also the areas where the team needed to be reinforced.
He was, anyway, managing in a way the technical development of the car, but also the team, the people that were needed and taking care of which areas we need to reinforce as a team, which other areas were less important.
Fernando Alonso said, as reported by motorsport.com.
Further, Fernando Alonso reiterated that Adrian Newey was doing a lot of management work within Aston Martin. Meanwhile, former Team Principal Andy Cowell focused more on the engine side and hence would better fit in the power unit department. As such, Alonso reckoned that moving Newey to a leadership role was a logical decision heading into the 2026 season.
So, in a way, he was doing internally a lot of management and Andy was doing a lot of management as well on the engine side and engine integration to the chassis. It was maybe a normal logic step into 2026.

Fernando Alonso claims Aston Martin ‘in good hands’ for the upcoming seasons
Aston Martin is not giving up on the dreams of joining the front of the grid and fighting for race wins. The team can expect great results in the 2026 season if it can nail the new regulations. With Adrian Newey, it is just a matter of time before they start dominating the grid in terms of performance. As such, Fernando Alonso is confident in the crew that will work on the challenger for the upcoming season.

Fernando Alonso claimed that Aston Martin had the two best people in Andy Cowell and Adrian Newey. He reflected that one worked hard on the chassis side and the other on the power unit. Moreover, a strong leader in Lawrence Stroll, who has a great determination to succeed, would only help the team in the long run. As such, the Asturian claimed that the team was in good hands for the upcoming seasons.
We have probably the two best people, One doing the chassis and the team, one [doing] the engine integration and the team as well. And we have a very strong leader with Lawrence, with the determination that Lawrence has and the commitment that he’s shown for many, many years already. So between the three of them, I think we are in good hands. Let’s move into 2026 with hopefully a better car.
Fernando Alonso noted.
Aston Martin’s performance in the 2025 season was nothing short of a disappointment. Neither Fernando Alonso nor Lance Stroll was able to even contend for a podium finish in any of the races. Hence, Alonso would definitely hope for a much better time to come in the 2026 season.
