Reserve driver Felipe Drugovich took over for him. On Thursday, Alonso skipped media activities, and by Friday, he still wasn’t fit enough to drive in FP1. However, Aston Martin confirmed that the Spaniard would continue from FP2, closely hoping he’ll recover fully in time for Saturday.

Alonso admitted he hadn’t felt well for a few days, possibly due to weakness from being sick. Driving a Formula 1 car demands immense energy, and that weakness may have held him back.

It’s good to be back and I’ve not been feeling 100% over the last few days. Today I did feel okay in the car, but it’s very physically demanding driving an F1 car.

Fernando Alonso said, as reported by Aston Martin F1

Alonso was excited to celebrate his 400th Grand Prix in Mexico City, thrilled about reaching this career milestone. Unfortunately, illness struck, but he’s recovering and determined to race.

The Mexican Grand Prix is loved for its weather, track conditions, and lively atmosphere. The Spaniard feels the Mexican fans always show amazing support. Winning his 400th race would make the celebration even more special, giving him a perfect double victory.

Mexico City is always a nice race weekend and of course a double celebration here with the 400 Grand Prix.

The Spaniard explained his FP2 experience describing it as mixed feelings, especially with the tire testing. He also believes it’s too early to draw any solid conclusions from his team’s performance so far. Alonso mentioned that they expect a challenging weekend because the Mexican circuit is tough for AMR23’s setup.

In general FP2 was a mixed feeling with the tyre testing and I don’t think we can have any conclusions yet. We expect a difficult weekend as it’s a tough circuit for our package, but we will give it our all.

Fernando Alonso said

Despite these difficulties, he emphasized that the team would put in their best effort to compete. The combination of tire testing and the demanding nature of the track means they have to stay focused and work hard to make the most of their situation. The Silverstone-based squad currently ranks fifth in the constructors with 62 points being scored by the 43-year-old.
