Fernando Alonso has decided to stay with Aston Martin. The Spaniard has been previously linked with Mercedes but he has recently committed his future to the Silverstone-based team. Alonso will stay with the outfit till the end of the 2026 season, by that time he will be 45 but he plans on staying connected with the team even after that.

Fernando Alonso has already disproved the notion that F1 drivers are well past their prime once they get into their 40s. Alonso has recently talked about his after-retirement plans and with his contract extension, he has a few potential things lined-up with Lawrence Stroll-owned team.

While talking about this in-depth, the Spaniard had the following to say.

I think that was for me a must, to enter the new regulations with a new project, with a new wind tunnel, and also with Honda as a partner... it was something for me that was very, very important. We have incredible, talented people in the team now on the technical side [and] they will benefit from the new wind tunnel and the new facilities at Silverstone, so there were a lot of factors that made '26 very appealing with Aston, and that was a theme. But it's not only ‘26 - it's a lifetime project, in a way, for me.

Honda will be partnering up with Aston Martin in 2026, after working with Red Bull for all these years. It will be a little reunion moment for Alonso with Honda, as they provided the engines to McLaren in 2016 and 2017. After driving in the F1 for so many years, the 43-year-old driver plans on staying part of the sport even after his retirement in some capacity and helping Aston Martin achieve several accolades down the line.

After spending over two decades at the pinnacle of motor racing, Fernando Alonso is still willing to keep up with the grueling schedule. The Spaniard has claimed that he is here to stay and is thus going to keep on performing at his level best until the end of his most recent contract.

Alonso finished the 2023 campaign in a commendable fourth place in the drivers’ championship.

I breathe F1, I live for F1, I train to be fit to drive F1, I eat to be fit to be drive F1. it didn't arrive the moment I felt the need to change lifestyle. I love what I do. I will not be happy sitting at home watching F1 because at the moment I still feel I should be there.
Fernando Alonso said in an interview with BBC

The Spaniard believes that the sport has become an integral part of his life. Of course, when you dedicate your entire life to something, it becomes a part of who you are. With spending so much time on track, Alonso genuinely feels he still has some racing left in him. He has so far managed to amass two world championships in his insanely long F1 career.
