Adrian Newey shocked the F1 paddock when he announced his Red Bull exit in May this year. The Briton had worked at Milton Keynes for nearly two decades and was pivotal in its success. Newey decided to join Aston Martin next season. Now, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso has revealed that he contacted the aero-genius after the Red Bull announcement.

Newey was rumored to be in contact with several teams including Ferrari. However, the 65-year-old ultimately signed a massive deal with Aston Martin which even made him a shareholder. Fernando Alonso confessed that he texted Adrian Newey that he would love to work with him during the rumor cycle. As the Spaniard was keen to have the Briton at the Silverstone squad.

I was asking various people in the team if we had contacted Adrian. I even ended up contacting him. I have his phone number and texted him: ‘What a surprise. If you ever think you would like a new challenge, I would love to work with you one day.’

The two-time world champion revealed that Aston Martin Chairman Lawrence Stroll kept him up to date regarding the discussions with Newey. Alonso claimed that he was full of pride when the aero-genius decided to confirm his move to the British team. As Adrian Newey showed faith in the team’s long-term vision.

And I then found out that Adrian and Lawrence Stroll were in contact. Lawrence kept me up to date on negotiations. When Adrian decided to join, I was extremely happy but also extremely proud – proud that he wanted to work with us and that he believed in our project.

Adrian will arrive in March next year and dedicate his time to 2026 so let’s see how I feel at the end of ’26 and if I can keep going: it will be a decision that we make together as a team, with Lawrence [Stroll], with Adrian.
