Adrian Newey recently announced his departure from Red Bull which spooled up the speculations regarding him to join Ferrari. However, these rumors came to no end as multiple reports revealed that the design wizard was heading to Aston Martin. This raised questions regarding why Ferrari stopped their pursuit of the design legend, to which Fred Vasseur gave a sarcastic reply while rubbing PSG‘s wounds of never being able to win the Champions League.
Ferrari is celebrated as the most elusive manufacturer in motor racing history. However, the team has been in a championship drought since 2008. On the other hand, PSG has been at the helm of French football since the 1980s but has never managed to win a single Champions League trophy. They came close to winning the title in 2020 but lost to Bayern Munich.
More often than not, the French outfit has starred the best players in Europe and has not been able to win a solitary title.
I've always said that the group comes first. This applies to engineers, drivers and anyone. It's not the sum of talents that generates performance but a right combination of factors. PSG has always had the best team, yet has never won the Champions League. We, on the other hand, are on the right track.Fred Vasseur said in an interview with Corriere.it
Subsequently, when Ferrari’s supremo was asked why they ended their hunt for Adrian Newey, Fred Vasseur explained the importance of a group rather than an individual. He then used the example of PSG to convey his message by claiming that despite having the best squad, the French team never succeeded in winning the Champions trophy, thus, implying that the strength of the group is larger than that of an individual.
Fred Vasseur claimed the race in Zandvoort exceeded his expectations
On the other hand, Ferrari had a respectable showing at Zandvoort. The Scuderia had a mediocre qualifying as Carlos Sainz was knocked out in Q2 and Charles Leclerc only managed to qualify P6. However, the race was another story as the SF-24 was gentle on its tires and had great race pace in comparison to the leaders.
This impressive showing made the team principal happy who did not expect to get a huge haul of points from the Dutch GP weekend.
We were not very optimistic coming to Zandvoort, but today it went very well for both sides of the garage: we had good starts, good strategy, good pit stops, with both drivers managing their tyres very well. Charles was able to keep (Oscar) Piastri behind him and deserved this podium. We have to be positive and appreciate this, even if we have to keep in mind that (Lando) Norris was a long way ahead and really, we need to focus on getting wins, not finishing P3.Fred Vasseur said in the press release by Ferrari
The 56-year-old further commented.
Looking at the race, already on Friday, we felt we were in better shape on used tyres than with new ones. So, overall it has been a good weekend and we must build on this. There are still nine races to go, some of them will suit us better than others and we must see what we can do with the new package that is coming soon, but today has certainly been a confidence boost for the team. Tonight we will allow ourselves to enjoy this podium and as from tomorrow we will focus on Monza.Fred Vasseur said
The Frenchman asserted that he was not optimistic as McLaren were the pace leaders. However, by securing a podium with the Monegasque, who held up Oscar Piastri in a much slower car, and Sainz recovering to P5, he was content with the team’s results.
Despite the great results in Zandvoort, the next race is Ferrari’s home race. Moreover, Sainz would like to recreate his 2023 pole around Monza for one last time while repping the red outfit, but McLaren’s overwhelming pace might bring their hopes crashing down.
