Mercedes driver George Russell has shared his thoughts after news of his Belgian GP disqualification. Russell’s car was found to be under the specified weight standards by the FIA after the race on Sunday.

George Russell won in Spa with a courageous one-stop strategy, managing his tires efficiently for over 30 laps. The 26-year-old’s run on Sunday was one of the very best performances he ever put in an F1 car.

But the FIA’s investigation failed to yield results in favor of Russell, which ended up disqualifying him from the race. The win around the 7.004 km circuit would have been his third career triumph and his second of this season.

Heartbreaking… We came in 1.5kg underweight and have been disqualified from the race. We left it all on the track today and I take pride in crossing the line first. There will be more to come.

Russell asserted that he is heartbroken upon performing to the best of his abilities but coming up short because of compromising standards of his car. The British driver will now settle down during the summer break, hoping to get back on track in high spirits.

The positives, the very positive, that we can take from this race is that we had two cars that were the benchmark in this race with two different strategies. Who would have said that a few months ago? And that is that is really good to see.

Toto Wolff preferred to look at the brighter side of the Belgian Grand Prix, deeming that his team is back to its very best this season. Wolff felt that both his drivers functioned competitively with completely different strategies, which is a strong sign for the future.

Mercedes will now hope to regroup and understand the issues behind Russell’s disqualification during the summer break. The Silver Arrows will be pleased with the pace of the W15 and will be in high spirits to perform at Zandvoort in August.
