Max Verstappen dominated Formula 1 at the start of the ground-effect era in 2022. The Dutch driver annihilated the competition in 2023. However, last season was far different with Verstappen facing a stiff challenge from Lando Norris. Now, former F1 driver Gerhard Berger has applauded the Red Bull star’s campaign.

Verstappen had a record-breaking campaign in 2023. Though, things changed drastically in the past season with the 27-year-old going winless for months. Nevertheless, he managed to salvage a fourth F1 title in a row by a stellar recovery by the end of the year.

Berger labeled Max Verstappen as the best driver on the current grid. The 65-year-old emphasized that previously, the 27-year-old had the best car with Red Bull. Though, 2024 turned this upside down as Milton Keynes struggled against the competition. Thus, Gerhard Berger claimed that the reigning world champion managed to pull chestnuts out of fire to win last year’s championship.

Verstappen is the best driver, no question about it. But before, the best driver was in the best team. In the meantime, however, Max is pulling the chestnuts out of the fire.

Max Verstappen’s big Red Bull dilemma

The Dutch driver is contracted to the Austrian team till 2028. However, rumors have emerged that teams like Aston Martin are eager to poach him as early as next season. Berger reckoned that 2025 might be the litmus test for Max Verstappen’s Red Bull stint as the 27-year-old might consider moving elsewhere if he has another difficult campaign.

Now it will be exciting to see if Red Bull can return to its former strength, or if Verstappen will continue to have difficulties winning. Then he will have to consider whether he is still in the right team.

Gerhard Berger noted

So far, Verstappen seems content at Milton Keynes. The 27-year-old hopes to fight for his fifth F1 title in a row this year. However, his title prospects will depend on Red Bull’s position in relation to rival teams once the season commences in Melbourne next month.
