The 2024 Belgian GP is well underway with Thursday’s proceedings done and dusted. While everyone is looking forward to it, the Ex-Haas boss, Guenther Steiner, has made a fascinating statement on McLaren for their Hungarian GP antics.
The Woking-based team amassed a brilliant 1-2 finish with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris but what happened during the closing stages grabbed more attention. Norris was reluctant to give up his first place in favor of Piastri, but after a bit of back-and-forth, he eventually agreed to it.
For this very reason, Guenther Steiner feels Andrea Stella and Co. could have handled the situation better! On the famous Red Flags Podcast, Steiner was asked to dwell on the Hungarian GP, and his conversation with the podcast host went like this:
Podcast host: Who is your rockstar and wa*ker for Hungary? Steiner: The rockstar is McLaren as a team, but they could also be the wa*kers because they fu*ked it up, you know, so there is nothing in between!Guenther Steiner via the Red Flags Podcast
Looking at the reaction of Steiner, it is quite clear that in his opinion, McLaren did not do a good job in handling its drivers at the Budapest event. During the closing stages, Norris was incredibly upset when he was asked to give up first place for Piastri’s maiden Grand Prix win.
McLaren could lose the ‘world championship’ because of Budapest
While Steiner has suggested that the Woking-based team did a terrible job from the pit wall in Budapest, he further feels their decision-making could cost them the 2024 title. The papaya outfit is very much in the fight for both world championships.
As things stand, McLaren is only 51 points behind Red Bull in the Constructors standings.
It could end up that this decision made them the wa*kers at the end of the season losing a world championship.Guenther Steiner via the same podcast
Red Bull has not won a single race since in the last three Grand Prix events. Mercedes triumphed in Austria and Silverstone whereas McLaren did last week in Hungary. Keeping all this in view, the ongoing race weekend holds tremendous significance for all three teams and even for Ferrari. They are also still in the championship picture despite their ongoing difficult run in F1.
