Red Bull and the Woking-based McLaren F1 team are in a fierce tussle for the 2024 constructors championship. The latter is currently leading the title race with 41 points and amidst the hype of Red Bull bringing upgrades to the US GP, Ex-Haas boss Guenther Steiner has played down their chances.
Only six races remain in the campaign, and the Max Verstappen-led team is set to bring a major upgrade package to COTA. Moreover, it has been heavily speculated that the biggest upgrade will be on the floor of the RB20.
But despite this, Steiner is doubtful whether the Austrian team would be able to catch the high-flying McLaren.
Keeping in view the trajectory of the Milton-Keynes-based team this year, Steiner has doubts regarding the effectiveness of the RB20 upgrade. The outfit has not won a single Grand Prix since round 10 of the ongoing season.
Ferrari can play a ‘bigger role in the world championship’
While Guenther Steiner has somewhat downplayed Red Bull’s chances in the 2024 F1 season, he also feels Ferrari can have a say in the championship battle. The Maranello-based team is currently in third place with a gap of 34 points to second-placed Red Bull.
As things stand, Ferrari has the second-fastest car behind the papaya’s MCL38.
Since the end of the summer break, the Ferrari F1 team has produced some strong performances. The most noticeable of all was Charles Leclerc‘s victory in the Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull’s COTA upgrade could make or break their rest of the 2024 season. In case it turns out to be a disappointment, Ferrari will have a golden chance of closing the gap to them and taking hold of second place in the constructors’ championship.
