Max Verstappen has given it his all to contend for race wins in the 2025 season. However, Red Bull’s ever-so-worsening form has prevented the Dutchman from making winning races a habit. The reigning world champion is way off the lead of the drivers’ title, as the gap to Oscar Piastri widens to 97 points after a P9 finish at the Hungarian GP. As such, Red Bull’s advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, comes clean on Verstappen’s championship ambitions for the final season of the ground effect era.
Max Verstappen had already declared that his results did not matter anymore since he lost a lot of running against the championship leader in Oscar Piastri. Even though many people refuse to give up on Verstappen and his winning chances this year, Helmut Marko is ready to accept the harsh reality. With just ten races to go, the chances of the Dutchman being able to even contend for the title are already a big deal.
Helmut Marko did not mince his words and provided a short but brutal statement on Max Verstappen’s championship chances this season. The 82-year-old declared that it was now clearly impossible to witness Verstappen lift the championship trophy in the 2025 season. The Dutchman wouldn’t be too happy with this revelation, but he is still prepared to give his all in the final ten races and keep racing with the team.
It’s impossible, clearly.

Max Verstappen’s time at the Hungarian GP weekend was nothing short of a massive disaster. The Dutchman could only achieve a P8 start to the race as he ultimately lost one place due to the mediocre pace of the challenger. As such, after finishing in P9 after a very long time, Helmut Marko accepted that the team’s pace was ‘inferior’ at best at the Hungaroring. The Austrian reckoned that a one-stop strategy might have been better, as overtaking was very difficult for the four-time champion.
Inferior, but I think one stop would have been better, because overtaking was really difficult.

Max Verstappen issues brutal statement on ‘winning changes’ after Hungarian GP
Max Verstappen was lucky enough to win two coveted races at the beginning of the 2025 season, when Red Bull’s challenger still performed well. However, in the past couple of races, the car has gone from bad to worse as the Dutchman gets real on winning any more races in the remainder of the season.

Verstappen pointed out that he had no idea if Red Bull was capable of winning any more races in the ten races left in the 2025 season. Especially after going through the Hungarian GP weekend, the Dutchman asserted that it was difficult to speak about anything meaningful on the matter. Regardless, the reigning world champion has some hope for something ‘unexpected’ to come up and help the team perform better than they currently are.
No idea. After a weekend like this, it’s hard to say anything meaningful about it. But you never know—sometimes something unexpected comes up.

The 2025 season is halfway over, and Max Verstappen clearly doesn’t seem to be in the mix for winning the drivers’ title. McLaren’s extremely dominant pace isn’t making Verstappen’s life any easier either. As such, the Dutchman will have to give it his all in the final ten races and hope for a miracle turnaround in performance. For now, the 27-year-old will enjoy the summer break alongside his family and forget the struggles of Formula 1.
