Helmut Marko claims Red Bull might be ‘HANDICAPPED’ in 2024 development war after Sergio Pérez’ huge Monaco shunt

Red Bull Technical Advisor, Helmut Marko has given his thoughts on the damages caused by Sergio Perez during his crash at the Monaco GP. The latter had a huge shunt on lap 1 after Haas F1 driver, Kevin Magnussen crashed into him.

Red Bull has estimated damages worth $3 million in the repair of the Mexican driver’s RB20. This comes as a major hit to the expenses of Red Bull after a $135 million budget cap was issued for the 2024 season.

Helmut Marko spoke in dismay, saying that such an expense would heavily affect Red Bull’s planning and long-term production of parts. The Milton-Keynes-based team currently leads the drivers and constructors championship over Ferrari, who are placed second.

That clearly affects us, because there are considerations about what to do with the car. Three million is then missing for our considerations. In the worst case, this means that we can do less development. If we have to do something extra due to the greater competitiveness of Ferrari and McLaren, we are obviously handicapped.

Red Bull was miles apart in comparison to Ferrari at the Monaco GP. The team would thus look to bounce back from this deficit in time for the upcoming Canadian event. However, Marko claimed that due to the incurrence of further costs, the Austrian outfit faces a situation of helplessness in the sphere of extra development to compete with the ever-improving McLaren and Ferrari.

Max Verstappen has opened up about the struggles of the RB20 around bumpy circuits where it has been notably unstable and off the pace. Red Bull has struggled with bumps in the past two seasons.

We need to understand what it is, because we clearly don't understand it. But we will work hard to find the problem and then try to get rid of it. I don't know if we can do it this year but hopefully for next year.

Red Bull is seemingly not focused on the issue of its car facing problems with bumps as Max Verstappen elaborated. The Dutchman also said that circuits with high-speed kerb riding corners have been the bane of his team for the better part of two years.

The Christian Horner-led outfit will now try to focus on fixing RB20s downforce issues around corners. Moreover, this is not a problem to be fixed within weeks as indicated by Verstappen. Up next is the Canadian GP, where Red Bull will try to bounce back from their poor performance in Monaco.
