Fernando Alonso is often considered one of the greatest drivers in motorsport. Unfortunately, the Spanish driver has failed to demonstrate his brilliance with his last F1 title coming in 2006. Now, F1 legend Jacky Ickx has expressed his desire to see the two-time world champion win again.
Ickx pointed out that years which have gone by, never come back. Fernando Alonso won his two world titles in 2005 and 2006, ending Michael Schumacher and Ferrari’s dominance. Jacky Ickx claimed that he wants to see the 43-year-old put an end to this long-winning drought and take his third F1 championship soon.
The years that have passed do not come back and he was champion in 2005 and 2006. I hope the Spaniard can win his third world championship.
Jacky Ickx told Mundodeportivo
The former Le Mans winner recalled Alonso’s impressive stint with Aston Martin at the start of 2023, when the Spaniard became a regular podium contender. Unfortunately the Silverstone-based squad fell behind rivals, forcing Fernando Alonso to just fight for points last year. Ickx noted that Formula 1 remains a difficult sport.
Last year with Aston Martin he was doing very well (2023) and we all thought he could be there. The world of F1 is very difficult,
Jacky Ickx added
Fernando Alonso’s key trait makes him ‘very special’
The F1 icon noted that Alonso’s longevity in the world of motorsport was remarkable, a key trait which made the Aston Martin driver truly special. Fernando Alonso holds the record for the most races in the sport’s history with 404. The Spanish driver has no intention to stop anytime soon, with a planned title bid in 2026. Jacky Ickx even praised the 43-year-old’s personality.

His longevity alone is proof that he is very special. Also for his human and driving quality. He is a whole. I like him.
Jacky Ickx stated
Fernando Alonso will be hoping to potentially fight for podiums again this year. This could be a difficult task considering Aston Martin’s pace deficit to the front. It is likely that the British team would divert its focus on 2026 early to gain an advantage over the major rule changes.
