James Vowles, the team principal of Williams, was very active in finding a new driver to replace Logan Sargeant and set his sights on Carlos Sainz. Since Sainz was leaving Ferrari, Vowles saw a chance to improve the Williams team and worked hard to sign him. However, he compared his negotiation with Sainz to almost dating him as the talks were so long and convincing.
After overcoming the challenges of signing Carlos Sainz, James Vowles reflected on the process. He likened negotiating with Sainz to dating. It began with casual, friendly messages and eventually included visits to the Spaniard’s hotel. The lengthy and involved negotiations felt like a courtship to Vowles, highlighting the significant effort he has put into securing Sainz for the team.

Vowles stated that the process of signing Carlos Sainz stayed consistent throughout. From start to finish, he communicated the same message, sharing both the positive and negative aspects. He explained that even though the negotiations took a week, the overall message didn’t change. The duration of the process didn’t alter the core communication or the effort involved.
The way, though, of getting him across the line was – from the beginning to now – the same message. All the good things and all the bad things. When you do it over one week, it doesn’t make a difference.James Vowles added.
