Ty Gibbs has suffered from a woeful outing in recent years, especially in the 2025 season. Despite winning the inaugural In-Season tournament and the $1 million prize, Gibbs’ performance has been unsatisfactory.
The 22-year-old has also failed to make it into the playoffs despite JGR performing at an impressive level with Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe. Now, team owner Joe Gibbs delivers a brutal take on the #54 driver and his performances so far.
Joe Gibbs‘ grandson, Ty Gibbs, has failed to surpass expectations in terms of performance this year despite winning the In-Season tournament. Gibbs managed to achieve nine top ten finishes and four top five finishes, but couldn’t make the playoffs cut based on points standings. Even in the remaining races, the 22-year-old isn’t able to fare well and fight for a finish good enough to grant him praise.
Joe Gibbs Racing owner Joe Gibbs has now come clean on his grandson’s results and failure to perform well so far. Gibbs accepted the fact that NASCAR was one of the more difficult sports and how hard it was to keep up with positive results. However, the 84-year-old asked Ty Gibbs to be patient and put his head in the game and give it his all.
Ty Gibbs wasn’t really happy with Joe Gibbs using the word patience, as the latter recalled that two races ago, the 22-year-old asked him to stop using the word after every race.
As such, the team owner emphasized that patience was now out of the window, and he needed a different approach with the grandson. The JGR driver will have to work extremely hard on his pace and ensure much better results in the coming year to hold onto his seat.
Yeah, this sport is really hard and I keep telling him, honestly I use the word patience and two races ago we were talking after the race and he said, coach will you quit using the word patience? I don’t want you to ever use it again. So patience is out the window.
Joe Gibbs said in a press conference, via @ClaireBLang/X.
In deadline room @ItsBristolBaby Coach Gibbs on (10th place) finish by grandson @TyGibbs -who led a race high 201 laps Sat. night. I have always thought Ty and his young team were coming. Do you agree or want to arm wrestle on that one? 🙂

Joe Gibbs claims he ‘admires’ Ty Gibbs and his crew
Ty Gibbs and the #54 crew have shown up at every race with a positive mindset and hoping to fight for positive results. Although the current season has been difficult for the crew, they aren’t going to go down without a fight and give up anytime soon. Hence, despite a lack of results to boast about, Joe Gibbs still has some words of affirmation for Gibbs Jr. and his crew at Joe Gibbs Racing.

Joe Gibbs asserted that Ty Gibbs was aware of his interest and love towards motorsports, especially NASCAR, and was aware that he wanted to race in the pinnacle of stock racing for the rest of his life. Moreover, Gibbs Jr. is still young and has a long career ahead of him.
As such, Gibbs Sr. admired the 22-year-old and his determination alongside the #54 crew in the team. The 84-year-old noted that the entire crew on that side was young and still had a lot to learn in the sport before achieving great success.
I just think he knows this is what he’s going to do, you know, his entire life and so he’s after it and I think I admire, like I said, our entire 54 team. To be truthful, they’re young but the pit crew, everybody, they just keep fighting. So it’s really great.
Joe Gibbs noted
The 2025 season would be one to forget for Ty Gibbs, even though he will walk out of the year with a grand prize of $1 million. Gibbs can learn a lot about NASCAR from his veteran teammate, Denny Hamlin, who is also the winningest driver in NASCAR this season. Now, time will tell about how the coming years pan out for the promising driver in the 22-year-old.
