Mercedes has struggled in the ground-effect era of Formula 1. The Silver Arrows faced a difficult couple of seasons and have even lost Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari. However, FIA Steward and former F1 driver Johnny Herbert has made a bold claim over Brackley’s prospects for 2025.

Herbert claimed that some believe that Mercedes might be the team to watch out for this year. The 60-year-old reckoned that the upcoming season might be feasible for the Silver Arrows. He asserted that the 2025 season would likely be the best shot for Toto Wolff‘s squad due to a close fight at the front.

The surprise of 2025 would, according to some, Mercedes who have been successful over the years, but not lately… Is it the right time for that? Well, not the right time. Is it feasible this year? This is probably the best chance they will get because I think the races will be so close.

The Silver Arrows have made taken a bet on 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli who replaces Hamilton. Wolff has already warned against keeping too high expectations on Antonelli. While George Russell takes up the role of team leader at Brackley.

2026 a big ‘unknown’ for Mercedes

The 2026 rule change will likely shake up the pecking order. Although, Johnny Herbert insisted that the new regulations remain a big unknown for all teams, including Mercedes. As such, Toto Wolff’s team has a much better chance at fighting for the world title in the upcoming season instead.

If we then move on to 2026, things will be completely different. Nobody really knows what will happen that year, that is the year that a team has to take the horns and take the lead. And Mercedes can do that.

Johnny Herbert stated

Mercedes seemed to be a distant fourth in terms of pace last season. Russell and Antonelli will hope to be in closer contest to Red Bull and McLaren in the coming months. However, it will likely remain an uphill task for Wolff and his team to get back to title contention.
