Max Verstappen recently scored his fourth consecutive championship win in Formula 1 and joined the likes of some highly achieved individuals. Due to these performances, the Dutchman has been compared to legends like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna in the sport. Hence, amidst the ongoing comparison, F1 pundit Johnny Herbert pointed out some similarities between Verstappen and Schumacher.

Michael Schumacher was a good friend of Max Verstappen‘s family in the past while the latter was just a kid. Hence, due to this, FIA steward Johnny Herbert believed that some wisdom from the seven-time champion passed on to Verstappen. The 60-year-old reckoned that some comments from the German ‘stuck’ with the 27-year-old over his racing career.

I think those types of comments that Michael Schumacher may have spoken to Max Verstappen about would stick with you.

Not only Verstappen, but his father Jos Verstappen also took in major learnings about the sport from Schumacher. Herbert noted that Verstappen Sr. didn’t want to forget the advice from the German. Moreover, the 60-year-old believed that the Dutchman used similar tactics on his son in present times to ensure a similar performance improvement to the seven-time champion.

I know Jos Verstappen would still be making sure that he doesn’t forget them at the same time. I think he’s used so much on how Michael worked within a team to make the maximum step in the group that we’ve got today, the strength that he’s got and has had since a very, very young age from when he first got into Formula One.

Johhny Herbert recalled Max Verstappen’s ‘horrible reputation’ during his debut

Max Verstappen joined the Formula 1 paddock in the 2015 season got up to speed from the get-go and started to perform well. However, the reigning world champion was a hard driver even back during his debut. Johnny Herbert recalled how the Dutchman had a ‘horrible reputation’ in the past for pushing drivers off the track. I always remember when he did his first season in Formula One, he got this horrible reputation of driving people off the circuit, being a hard racer. And he was like, well, hard racing is what it’s all about. You don’t put people in the wall; you push them onto the grass.

Johhny Herbert noted

Verstappen is on the trajectory to shatter multiple major records in Formula 1 if he keeps up with the same pace and performance. The Dutchman has claimed on multiple occasions that he wouldn’t continue racing for another decade. As a result, it would be interesting to witness how the remainder of the 27-year-old’s career pans out in the pinnacle of motorsport.
