Jos Verstappen is known for playing a huge role in shaping Max Verstappen‘s attitude and performances in Formula 1. Verstappen Jr. had previously revealed his father’s harsh and unorthodox methods to keep the former in check. One such story was of the father leaving his son at the gas station due to disappointing performances in a karting race.
Jos Verstappen provided clarity over the story and revealed the truth. Verstappen Sr. recalled the truth and claimed that he never left Max Verstappen at the petrol station. Rather, the 52-year-old just didn’t talk with his son for over a week. The Dutchman pointed out that Verstappen Jr. didn’t believe this punishment to be ‘too harsh’.
Despite the intensity of the punishments, Verstappen Sr. believed that it helped shape Max Verstappen better for Formula 1. The 52-year-old reckoned that his son could deal with a ‘tough’ guy like Helmut Marko only because of this upbringing. Moreover, the Dutchman recalled that the 27-year-old only showcased ‘gratitude’ towards his father when it came to childhood.
Jos Verstappen reveals the factor that made him ‘extremely proud’ of Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen is one of the most winningest drivers on the Formula 1 grid in recent years, especially after winning his fourth consecutive title. However, apart from being a dominant driver, Verstappen is also infamous for his cold and straightforward attitude while racing.
Jos Verstappen believed that his son’s straightforward and unfiltered way of expressing himself in public was one of the many reasons he felt proud of him. The 52-year-old claimed that many people didn’t know the ‘real Max Verstappen’. Despite the Dutchman being aggressive naturally, he was also a calm, balanced, and friendly soul off-track.
Verstappen Jr. has kept up with performances despite facing extreme struggles in performance with Red Bull. The 27-year-old is on the path to creating history if he continues to score such impressive results. Moreover, the reigning world champion has many more years left in Formula 1 as he continues to prepare for the upcoming season.
