Max Verstappen faced an extremely disappointing end to Red Bull’s home race at the Austrian GP. The Dutchman was already on the back foot of performing well over the whole weekend due to problems with his car. To make matters worse, Verstappen suffered from a Lap 1 DNF after Kimi Antonelli collided into the back of the RB21. Now, Jos Verstappen has made an extremely shocking revelation on the 27-year-old’s reaction to Milton Keynes’ disappointing pace at Spielberg.
Max Verstappen‘s woes in the Austrian GP weekend started from the practice sessions. The Dutchman was already racing throughout the weekend without his long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who took the week off due to some family-related issues. On top of that, Verstappen could only manage a P7 position in the qualifying due to the double yellows and Red Bull’s poor performance. This meant the 27-year-old was already at a massive disadvantage heading into the main race on Sunday.
While Max Verstappen wasn’t impressed with the team’s pace, he hadn’t commented much on it publicly. Still, Jos Verstappen claims that Verstappen Jr. approached him and berated Milton Keynes’ current condition. The 27-year-old’s alleged exit clause could be activated soon enough if the woeful results continue and he falls even further in the pecking order. His Austrian DNF has also taken a massive hit in his points tally as the trailing George Russell comes even closer to the former in the championship standings.
Jos Verstappen revealed that Verstappen Jr. called him after qualifying in P7 on Saturday. The reigning world champion reportedly said on the call that Red Bull’s pace is just not good enough. While this could be true for the Austrian GP weekend, it can also open up speculations for the four-time champion losing hope in the Austrian constructor.
I already heard it on the phone, he said: ‘Yeah, it’s just not good enough.’

Jos Verstappen lambasts Red Bull’s ‘insignificant’ upgrade package
Red Bull still hasn’t written off the 2025 season yet as they continue to work on improving their pace. The team brought in an upgrade package in the Austrian GP itself, which didn’t help much at all. Milton Keynes still remained on the back foot of the entire race weekend and did not have a shot at competing for the race win. Moreover, the second driver problem hasn’t ended in the team yet, as Yuki Tsunoda seems unable to bring home points anymore.

Speaking of Red Bull’s most recent upgrade package, Jos Verstappen wasn’t too impressed with either the upgrade or the performance boost it promised. Verstappen Sr. insisted that the upgrades that the team rolled out did not make much of a difference. The pace was still nowhere near the dominating force of the McLarens. To make matters worse, the performance seemed to be even worse than Ferrari and Mercedes in Austria.
And I think the update that Red Bull brought doesn’t make that much of a difference.
Jos Verstappen noted
Jos Verstappen’s comments could be taken as a hint that Max Verstappen is finally looking to exit the team. Red Bull’s mass exodus hasn’t stopped either, as multiple key figures have already left, with many seeking to exit. However, a recent rumor suggested that Red Bull’s ex-four-time winning champion Sebastian Vettel could return as a more prominent and a leader figure after Helmut Marko‘s exit. This could pose a completely new situation for the team as they hope to steer clear of the desperate performance slump.
