Max Verstappen has noted his father Jos Verstappen‘s contribution to his career on multiple occasions. Verstappen Sr. is the person behind most of his son’s success in the pinnacle of motorsport. As a result, despite the 52-year-old’s own commitments to racing, he claimed that he still gave ‘honest’ feedback to his four-time champion son.

Jos Verstappen‘s controversial parenting techniques to improve Max Verstappen as a racer were always berated by everyone in the community. The 52-year-old recalled that he nudged his son in the ‘right direction’ at the beginning of his career which had gradually decreased. Verstappen Sr. believed that the 27-year-old was wise enough to make his own decisions.

Yes, of course I am also busy with Max. That’s a bit less now, but certainly at the beginning of his career I gave him direction, also in Formula 1 and that’s running now. He’s old and wise enough to do that himself now.

Jos Verstappen said on the podcast Op De Rallykoffie.

Jos Verstappen believed that he was the only one who gave the reigning world champion honest and critical feedback which the latter appreciated. The 52-year-old highlighted that he had the ‘best interests’ in his mind for his son and wanted him to win everything. The Dutchman accepted that honest feedback included being critical of the 27-year-old’s performances while on track.

I think I’m the one who still tells him honestly what’s going well and what’s not, and he appreciates that. I think everyone needs a bit of that. I mean, I always have his best interests at heart and of course we want to win everything. That includes criticism. And besides rally, that’s basically my life. Everything revolves around racing anyway.

Jos Verstappen revealed the ‘troubles’ of adjusting to rally racing

Jos Verstappen still participates in motorsports, especially Rallying. The 52-year-old recalled that adapting to the excruciating format of rally racing was difficult. Verstappen Sr. highlighted that he had a lot of troubles adjusting to his co-pilot’s directions and comments. The Dutchman claimed that while focusing on driving it was difficult to listen to the co-pilot. Regardless, much like Max Verstappen, his father is likely to find his peace at rally racing and get up to speed soon.

I think I had the most trouble with my co-pilot’s directions, so understanding those notes and someone constantly talking in your ear than with driving. I was fully concentrated driving, but the notes didn’t reach me, they didn’t penetrate. That’s where I struggled the most. The feeling with the car has always been there.

Jos Verstappen stated

Max Verstappen and his father are often spotted together over race weekends even when the former is struggling to perform well. The 52-year-old has been a crucial part of the Dutchman’s success in Formula 1 and is likely to stick around. Moreover, Verstappen Sr. will try his hands on multiple racing formats to also help his son get more knowledge about other categories of motorsport.
