Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri form one of the strongest driver pairings on the current F1 grid. Last season, the latter had more of a support role to Norris. However, former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya insists that tensions can arise between the two this year.

Ahead of the upcoming season, Lando Norris asserted that he was ready to challenge for the F1 title once again. While Oscar Piastri has declared similar ambitions. The Australian driver even claimed that he would not shy away from racing Norris hard when needed.

Montoya insisted that so far the two McLaren drivers have been fair to one another. Though, the 49-year-old predicted that things between Norris and Piastri could get ugly. He emphasized that the two could be a odds if McLaren allows them to race each other for the championship in the latter half of the season. Juan Pablo Montoya reckoned that the team had done a good job in keeping both drivers happy so far.

I think it could get ugly at the end of the year if they have a big advantage in points and they let them race for the championship. Otherwise, I think they’d be pretty even. McLaren has probably done the best job of keeping both drivers happy.

McLaren to remain ‘relaxed’ over team orders

Juan Pablo Montoya insisted that the Woking-based team would be rather relaxed over team orders this year. He cited that McLaren remains quite clear when it comes to handling such situations, courtesy of the ‘Papaya rules,’ introduced last season. Montoya insisted that the team wants to be fair to both Norris and Piastri.

Initially they’re going to be pretty relaxed about it. I think McLaren are going to be very clear that whoever’s ahead they’re going to have to be a little more respectful.

Juan Pablo Montoya added

Certainly, McLaren could witness an interesting battle in the upcoming season. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are ready to fight tooth and nail for race victories. Though, it is likely that the two will remain more respectful to one another in on-track battles. Fans will need to wait and see whether the two come to a stand-off by the end of the year.
