Lewis Hamilton‘s debut year with Ferrari in the 2025 season has been underwhelming. The Briton has been outscored by his teammate Charles Leclerc since the beginning of the year. Hamilton is unable to regain his dominant form and score impressive results with the Italian constructor. However, despite losing to Leclerc, ex-F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya reckons that the 40-year-old will not make life easy for the Monegasque.

Lewis Hamilton is currently P6 in the drivers’ standings, with Charles Leclerc being just one spot above him. Still, the two drivers are separated by 42 points, which seems to only grow further with every passing race weekend. Regardless, Hamilton hopes to regain his lost form and compete with not only his teammate but also the leading pack.

Juan Pablo Montoya sided with Lewis Hamilton in the matter and pointed out that the latter was at a point where he wanted to beat his teammate at any cost. The Briton has been putting in great effort, but since the SF-25 challenger isn’t up to his liking, he is unable to do so. Although the crew acknowledges the issues in the car, they are unable to grasp the magnitude of the issues in the car.

What’s really happening is that Lewis is at a point where he wants to beat his teammate. He’s putting in huge effort, working very hard, but the car isn’t to his liking. The engineers are starting to understand, but they still don’t fully grasp how difficult this car is to drive.

Juan Pablo Montoya told AS Colombia

Juan Pablo Montoya accepted that Charles Leclerc looked quick at Ferrari because he was accustomed to the car’s behavior. However, Montoya reckons that it is only a matter of time until Lewis Hamilton learns the quirks of the car and manages to score well despite having issues. As soon as he grasps a better understanding of the challenger, he would make life harder for Leclerc at Maranello.

Charles looks very quick because he can handle the car’s behaviour. I think that as Ferrari adjusts the car more to Lewis’s style and he gets comfortable, life will get harder for Charles. So far, it hasn’t been too tough for him, but we’ll see.

Lewis Hamilton pointed out that the F1 system needed to evolve. He recalled that drivers like Niki Lauda and others always tried to push for more safety in the sport. Now, the sport needs to focus on creating better access and opportunities. Hamilton asserted that while visiting a country for a race weekend, F1 needed to avoid leaving a mess there. The 40-year-old insisted that there needed to be a real upcycling and real recycling system put in place.

In the past, drivers like Niki Lauda pushed for more safety. Today, we need to create more access and more opportunities. When we go to all these countries, we have to avoid leaving a mess. There should be upcycling and a real recycling system.

Lewis Hamilton said to the Belgian outlet RTBF

Formula 1 has continued to grow and evolve in recent years, and Lewis Hamilton has been through it all. There still needs to be massive improvements in places that the sport hasn’t shed light upon. However, with the seven-time champion present, it is only a matter of time before strong steps are taken in this matter. For now, Hamilton’s priority will be his desperate performance slump and finding ways to get out of it.
