In Short
  • Lando Norris criticized the 2026 F1 regulations, calling them "artificial" and overly complex.
  • He expressed concerns about the unpredictability of power units affecting driver control during races.
  • Norris acknowledged the potential dangers of the new regulations, highlighting risks of crashes due to sudden speed changes.

Lando Norris suffered from a mediocre outing at the season opener Australian GP. The Briton was unable to compete for the race wins despite McLaren’s strong showing during the initial testing sessions. Ultimately, Norris finished in P5 after battling with Max Verstappen on the track. Now, the McLaren star has fired some shots at the regulations, which still seem to be complex for him.

The 2026 regulations have remained a massive talking point among the drivers, as many of them feel they are overly complex. Lando Norris had some concerning takes about the rules, but he was up for the challenge. Norris still performed better than the local hero Oscar Piastri, who suffered from a disappointing crash during a practice race start at the Australian GP.

Now, after a P5 finish on Sunday, Lando Norris has once again criticized the regulations after talking highly about them previously. The Briton asserted that the entire race saw a lot of chaos ensued, and big accidents were bound to happen. Norris insisted that it is a shame as drivers were waiting for something to go horribly wrong.

Way too much. It’s chaos, you’re going to have a big accident, which is a shame. You’re driving and we’re the ones just waiting for something to happen and something to go quite horribly wrong.

Lando Norris said, as reported by motorsport.com.

Lando Norris explained that it felt ‘artificial’ to him and the regulations certainly weren’t making it better. The Briton disliked the fact that the power unit randomly decided to do something random at times, and it was out of control of the drivers. Ultimately, George Russell brought home the race win to achieve a Mercedes one-two. Though Norris only finished in P5, it is a great start to the new regulations.

That’s not a nice position to be in, but there’s nothing we can really do about that now. It’s a shame, it’s very artificial, depending on what the power unit decides to do and randomly does at times.

Lando Norris added.

Lando Norris claims 2026 F1 regulations “not for me”

Despite claiming that drivers were paid more than enough to drive in Formula 1, and had to get used to the new regulations, Lando Norris now had a contrasting take. After suffering from multiple concerning situations at the Australian GP, Norris boldly asserted that the new regulations were not built around well, especially for drivers with his driving style.

Lando Norris pointed out that he was being overtaken by five cars, and there was nothing he could do about it. The 26-year-old accepted that there was no point cribbing about it, as no one would change the regulations now. Norris emphasized that if drivers lost battery on fast corners and got hit by others on track, they could end up in a massive crash, something which is horrible to think about as drivers.

You just get overtaken by five cars or you can just do nothing about it sometimes. There’s nothing we can change about it, so there’s no point in saying any more, but not for me. Just depending on what people do, you can have 30, 40, 50 kph speeds, When someone hits someone at that speed, you’re going to fly and you’re going to go over the fence and you’re going to do a lot of damage to yourself and maybe to others. That’s a pretty horrible thing to think about.

Lando Norris noted.

The 2026 regulations have been concerning so far. However, the racing action was great at the Australian GP, especially at the forefront. Max Verstappen fought a long battle with Lando Norris for the P5 spot, but ultimately the latter eked out better result. For now, the regulations are certainly a massive change, but the drivers have showcased great resilience to problems and will get used to it as well.
