The commencement of the 2026 season is right around the corner, with the first race being less than a month away. All the teams are preparing for the massive challenge under the new regulations. Amid the preparations, Lando Norris opens up on the regulations and how chaos will likely ensue on the grid during the first few race weekends.
The 2026 F1 regulations aim to focus more on active aerodynamics and the hybrid power unit. The previous DRS system to overtake has now been replaced by a much more active system, the Manual Override Mode. Drivers will now be able to lift both their front and rear wings to gain an extra boost in pace and pursue overtaking on tracks. Lando Norris believes that this will cause more chaos and overtakes on track.
Lando Norris reckoned that drivers will be overtaking on track, not because they are faster in pace, but just because of the advanced overtaking system. However, they will also have to face the consequences a couple of laps later, just to harvest battery. Moreover, after being overtaken, the driver will be able to gain some speed over the rival, which is essentially similar to the DRS system.
You’re going to see potentially someone overtake, and maybe not even because they’re much quicker, but just be able to overtake, But then [they] have a consequence of a lap or two trying to recover the battery in the correct way. As soon as you get overtaken and you’re behind that car, that’s crucial because you’ll be able to get five, 10km/h more on a straight, which is almost like what DRS was in some ways.
Lando Norris said, as reported by motorsport.com.
As such, Lando Norris believes that there will be more ‘yo-yoing’ on track, meaning back and forth in track positions between the drivers. However, an overly aggressive driver will then need to defend more on track against the drivers behind him. This ultimately will cause more chaos on the track, which is great for the audience spectating the race.
So yeah, you’ll see more yo-yoing, more moves with extra speed, but then that person might have to defend more than what you’ve seen in the past, and that will create more chaos, which is great for you guys.

Lando Norris reveals ‘good thing’ with 2026 F1 regulations
The 2026 regulations are believed to be better than the previous ground-effect era. Though many drivers are skeptical of the regulations’ effectiveness, many are happy to have moved on from the previous ones. Lando Norris, who believes George Russell is the ‘massive favorite’ to win the championship next season, has revealed the positives of the regulations.

Lando Norris believes that the new overtaking system will help drivers commit to overtakes in places where it was never seen before. However, committing to an overtake early on could set them up for a difficult defense in the subsequent turns. Norris believes that this system will create racing in better ways than before, which is definitely a good thing for the sport.
Because there’s a lot of straights and places, if you use boost, you gain a good amount of horsepower and you can overtake, which you’d never normally see before. But you’ll be able to force people more in different positions and create racing potentially in better ways than you have been able to in the past. And I think that’s probably a good thing.
Lando Norris noted.
The 2026 season is shaping up nicely to be extremely exciting for the fans and drivers alike. It will be interesting to witness which driver manages to excel under the new regulations. For now, a majority of the teams are managing expectations and not dreaming of dominating the track from the very beginning.
