Lando Norris seemed to be on the backfoot of winning the Hungarian GP following a failed shot at achieving the pole position. He started the race from P3 and lost a couple of positions at the beginning of the race. However, the 25-year-old executed a flawless strategy and did not commit any mistakes that could ruin his winning chances. Ultimately, the Briton brought home the victory as he now shared a hilarious take on his feelings throughout the race.

The Hungarian GP was nothing short of a rollercoaster for Lando Norris. McLaren’s dominant pace had helped him remain in the vicinity of the leading pack during the main race. Norris’ winning chances were further strengthened after a masterclass strategic call from the team for a one-stop strategy. Despite on-track challenges due to a single stop, the 25-year-old did not let it get the best of him as he maintained a calm head on track.

Speaking of the difficult outing on the Hungaroring and ultimately scoring the victory, Lando Norris joked that he was ‘dead’ after the session finally ended. The 25-year-old revealed that McLaren did not consider sticking to a one-stop strategy before the race started. However, after losing a handful of positions at the very beginning of the race, the team had to take a gamble with the one-stopper.

I’m dead, I’m dead! It was tough, we weren’t planning on the one-stop at the beginning but after the first lap it was our only chance to get back into things.

Lando Norris said in a post-race interview.

Lando Norris pointed out that he was pushing flat out from the moment he figured that he could win the race. As such, winning in Budapest was the ‘perfect result’ he could have asked for. Norris couldn’t believe that he would get a runner-up finish at best, owing to McLaren’s dominant pace. Anyhow, a race win was definitely not in the cards for the 25-year-old as he was left overjoyed after his impressive results.

I was pushing flat out, the perfect result today. I didn’t think it would get us the win, I thought it would get us into second as I knew the pace was good.

Lando Norris asserts ‘it’s fun’ racing with Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris came very close towards the final stages of the Hungarian GP, with the former unable to bridge the gap for the race win. The two McLaren drivers raced very hard until the end, and Piastri ultimately had to settle for a P2 finish. However, despite winning the race, Norris isn’t too cocky, as he is aware that he could’ve lost the victory to his Australian counterpart in the final moments.

Lando Norris reckoned that switching strategies mid-race is always a gamble, as he was glad that it paid off this time around. Norris insisted that it took good laps and no mistakes to ultimately win the race following a difficult outing on track.

Regardless, the 25-year-old raised delight at fighting hard against Oscar Piastri in the final stages of the race. The Briton emphasized that racing against Piastri is difficult but fun in its own way.

It’s always a bit of a gamble, it requires good laps and no mistakes. We are fighting hard, both of us. It is tough but fun racing with Oscar.

Lando Norris noted

Lando Norris is now only nine points adrift of the championship lead to Oscar Piastri. The Briton will have to keep working hard over the summer break and ensure that he comes back from the break with a similar, if not better, form on track. Piastri will also give it his all in the final ten races to hold onto his championship lead and win his maiden title in the pinnacle of motorsport.
