In Short
  • Lando Norris urges McLaren to utilize the five-week break for development after a disappointing start to the 2026 season.
  • The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs were canceled due to ongoing war conditions, providing teams extra time to improve.
  • Norris remains optimistic about McLaren's potential to address performance issues and regain competitiveness during the season.

The 2026 season has just begun, with the first two races being completed. However, for the likes of McLaren and Aston Martin, it might already feel like a lifetime. A majority of the teams have suffered from an extremely disappointing start to the year. As such, Lando Norris has urged Woking to take maximum benefit from the unexpected break from racing in Formula 1.

Notably, the Bahrain and the Saudi Arabian GP stand cancelled because of the ongoing war conditions in the Middle East. Because of the cancellation, this will provide the teams and drivers with a five-week buffer following the culmination of the Japanese GP. The Grand Circus will directly race at the Miami GP after returning from the unplanned break.

As such, following McLaren’s woeful start to the 2026 season, Lando Norris believes that the team must take full advantage of the five-week break. The Briton accepted that the car wasn’t at the level to fight for race wins or even podium finishes. Still, Norris highlighted that the entire season was left, with 20 more races to look forward to.

Further, Lando Norris asserted that the five-week break after the Japanese GP is a good thing for McLaren and Co. Norris is delighted that Woking will have a bit more time to develop their challenger over the break and see if the car performs better. Ultimately, the reigning world champion has confidence in the British constructor to figure out the problems and return to its winning ways.

We understand that the car is not to the level that it needs to be to fight for a podium or even a win at the time being, so we know that we have a lot of work ahead, It is still a long season, and after Japan, there is a good little break coming up, so that’s probably a good thing for us to try and figure things out, and it gives us a bit more time to maybe develop some things to see if we can get it on the car earlier. So, as much as it is not the start of the year that we want, I have a lot of confidence in the team that we can improve things.

Lando Norris said, as reported by RacingNews365.

Lando Norris makes a “that’s life” remark on McLaren’s dramatic 2026 downfall

McLaren dominated the track in the final years of the ground-effect era. The team picked up two consecutive constructors’ championships, with Lando Norris winning the driver’s title in 2025. However, the new regulations have proven to be a massive challenge for the team and drivers. Both Norris and Oscar Piastri couldn’t even start the Chinese GP because of issues in the car.

However, Lando Norris isn’t too concerned with McLaren’s difficult start to the year. Norris accepted that both he and Oscar Piastri would be happier if the car were performing better. But, the Briton reckoned that McLaren’s current condition wasn’t dissimilar to their struggles at the beginning of the ground-effect era, and having to catch up. Ultimately, the 26-year-old believes that these struggles are all part of life.

We would both be happier in the car if it were performing better and if we didn’t have issues, but it is not dissimilar to the situation of being behind and having to catch up, like a few years ago. That’s life, and we are where we are, and we have to work together in getting back to the top.

Lando Norris noted.

Certainly, McLaren has a massive gap to cover in terms of performance against the rivals. The team currently seems to be nowhere near the development of Mercedes and Ferrari. As such, it will be interesting to witness how the team overcomes its struggles over the five-week-long break following the culmination of the Japanese GP.
