In Short
  • Ferrari introduced a new rear-wing design called the 'Macarena wing' under 2026 regulations, which received mixed reviews.
  • Lewis Hamilton criticized the decision to rush the wing's deployment, suggesting it was premature for early-season use.
  • Hamilton emphasized the need for Ferrari to improve their car's power and performance to compete effectively in the season.

Ferrari put forth a highly ambitious rear-wing design under the new regulations. Now hilariously being called the ‘Macarena wing,’ the Italian constructor noted some benefits during the initial practice sessions. However, Lewis Hamilton has far from positive remarks about the fully rotating rear wing and has put forth his concerns with the same.

The new regulations of the 2026 season have seemed to be a massive challenge for many of the teams, involving Ferrari. The Italian constructor achieved some impressive results during the practice sessions. One of the pre-season tests, Maranello came up with a fully rotating rear wing while deploying the overtake mode in the car. All the fans were left baffled after witnessing such a brilliant piece of development.

However, Lewis Hamilton had some negative remarks on the same. The Briton asserted that he was unaware of why Ferrari went back to such an ambitious rear wing design. He continued that the team rushed to get it to China, and it wasn’t even supposed to be used in the car so early in the season. Hamilton revealed that the original plan was to only use it by race four or five.

I don’t really know why we went back on it, we rushed it to get it here, and it was not supposed to be on the car until like race four or five or something like that.

Lewis Hamilton said, as reported by RacingNews365.

Ferrari’s Macarena rear wing was only used during the initial practice session and not later on during the Sprint Qualifying. Lewis Hamilton noted that though the team did a great job rushing the rear wing to try it in China, it was a bit premature. As such, this was the reason Maranello decided to take it off the car and only bring it back when they were ready to work with such an extreme rear-wing design.

So [the team] did a great job to rush it here, and we only had two of them, but maybe it was a bit premature. So we took it off the car, it was still great, and we’ll work to try and bring it back when it is ready.

Lewis Hamilton added.

Lewis Hamilton reveals “lot of work to do” for Ferrari in 2026

Though Ferrari started the 2026 season on the right note, their performance at the Australian GP was far from satisfactory. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton still managed to achieve a second-row finish in the end. However, the team’s outing in China was far from ideal, and Hamilton has opened up on the impending work for the Italian constructor before they can compete for the race win.

Lewis Hamilton accepted that Ferrari needed to do a lot of work on their car and improve on power. The 41-year-old recalled that the team was aware of this in the previous season as well. Hamilton applauded Mercedes’ great job with their car so far, as George Russell achieves yet another pole position for the Chinese Sprint Race.

We have a lot of work to do, we really have to push so hard at the back, back in Maranello to improve on power. It was something that I think we were conscious of last year, that we thought that Mercedes started earlier than us or the rest, which they did last time as well. So, they’ve done a fantastic job and we’ve got to step up, we’ve got to push to be able to close that gap.

Lewis Hamilton said as reported by Formula 1.

The 2026 season has just begun and is a long way from completion. Ferrari’s race pace seems to be much better this time around. As such, all eyes will be on the Chinese GP and how the Italian constructor manages to defeat Mercedes at the forefront. For now, Lewis Hamilton is managing expectations and hoping to improve performance ahead of the main event.
