Lewis Hamilton highlighted that Ralf Schumacher has not felt comfortable coming out as gay before he actually decided to announce. He emphasized that this is not a new issue, but now we are in a time where people can finally come out without fear. Society has changed from what it was back then, allowing people to share freely what they might’ve kept private. Hamilton believes this is a positive development.
Clearly he has not felt comfortable being able to say it in the past. It is definitely not a new thing. But it shows that we are finally in a time finally when we can take that step and don't have to fear.Lewis Hamilton said, as reported by BBC.com
Hamilton hoped that Schumacher had received only positive feedback from people in Formula 1. He believed that the world is becoming more accepting and supportive, making it easier for individuals like Schumacher to come out and feel supported. The Briton viewed this as a sign of progress and hoped that this trend continues.
And hopefully he will be able to say that he's, I think, so far had only positive feedback from people [in F1] and that's because of the time we're living in and the changes we are.Lewis Hamilton stated
