Lewis Hamilton‘s woeful debut season with Ferrari continues even after finishing 17 rounds with the team. Hamilton was unable to fare well at the Azerbaijan GP and ultimately achieved only an P8 finish in the main race. The 40-year-old was on the back foot of performance since the beginning of the race and wasn’t too impressed with his finish. As such, the Briton opened up on his dismal outing in Baku.
Since the beginning of the race weekend, Lewis Hamilton seemed to be inconsistent in his performances at the Azerbaijan GP. Hamilton looked promising after leading the FP2 session ahead of Charles Leclerc. However, come qualifying, the Briton was eliminated from the Q2 qualifying session and was unable to fight for a pole position start.
Lewis Hamilton did gain a few positions on the track after starting from P12, but the pace was nowhere near satisfactory. Speaking on the woes in Baku, Hamilton accepted his and the team’s shortcomings as they had no chances of achieving a great finish. The 40-year-old pointed out that Ferrari went the wrong direction with the car at the Azerbaijan GP and hence suffered from the problems.
Further, Lewis Hamilton insisted that the team’s race pace was not on par despite finishing P8 after starting from P12. Upon this, Hamilton noted that he was happy to atleast gain a couple of positions after an already disastrous start to the race. Ultimately, the seven-time champion did not care about the P8 finish as he was disappointed to come out of the race weekend with no significant results.
Ultimately, we went the wrong direction with the car, but our ultimate pace was not on par. Happy I moved forwards from 12th, but… I really couldn’t care less for that position… definitely disappointed to come away with nothing.

Lewis Hamilton apologizes to Charles Leclerc for driver swap drama
Even Charles Leclerc had a woeful outing at the Azerbaijan GP, more so after crashing into the barriers in the Q3 qualifying session on Saturday. During the main race, Leclerc had a similar situation to Lewis Hamilton and was unable to fare well. In the final stages of the race, the Monegasque gave up the P8 spot to Hamilton in hopes of the latter having a better shot at moving up the pecking order.

However, Lewis Hamilton couldn’t do so and was unable to give back the position despite team orders coming in at the final moments. The Briton recalled that he was faster than Charles Leclerc in the race, but it was ‘gracious’ of the latter to let him by. Hamilton continued that he got the order to swap places very late into the race, and he was zoned out by then. The 40-year-old accepted that it was a misjudgment on his part and apologized for the whole fiasco.
Firstly…obviously I was quicker [in that moment of the race] but Charles was gracious to let me by. At the end I got the message really late on, and I was like zoned in on the car in front of me. That was just a misjudgment by myself. I’ll apologise to Charles. At the end of the day that’s [only] eighth and ninth.
Lewis Hamilton noted
The 2025 season now only has seven races to go after the culmination of the Azerbaijan GP. Lewis Hamilton has no chances at a championship contention. But, he can fight for race wins as anything can happen in the final half of the season. Now, time will tell if Ferrari manages to recover any pace possible this year or focus on the upcoming one.
