Lewis Hamilton suffered from a dismal debut with Ferrari in the 2025 season. The Briton could not live up to the expectations laid on him during his high-profile move to the Italian constructor.
Hamilton cracked under pressure and couldn’t even best his teammate Charles Leclerc at Maranello. Now, following the humiliation in 2025, ex-F1 driver Derek Daly has urged the seven-time champion to leave the sport before the sport leaves him.
The ground-effect era turned out to be a massive disaster for Lewis Hamilton after he failed to amass any notable results over the regulations. The 41-year-old also suffered from his career-worst season with Ferrari in 2025. Now, following the woes in the previous year, Derek Daly claims that Hamilton might need to exit Formula 1 for the better.
Derek Daly claimed that Lewis Hamilton was undoubtedly the greatest driver in the history of Formula 1. Daly shockingly highlighted that he was even better than Michael Schumacher.
However, the Irishman believed that it wasn’t going to get any better for Hamilton, especially with his age being 40 years old. The 72-year-old boldly noted that the seven-time champion wasn’t going to be able to match up to the young generation of drivers at 18,19 years of age.
Hamilton undoubtedly is the greatest F1 driver ever, I think he’s better than [Michael] Schumacher. However, it’s not going to get better for him. It’s a physiological thing. At 40 plus years of age, you’re not going to run as well as 18, 19 and 20-year-olds.
Derek Daly told RacingNews365.
Further, Derek Daly insisted that Lewis Hamilton’s glory days in Formula 1 were now over. He firmly believes that it might not get better for the seven-time champion. Daly pointed out that if Hamilton does not retire soon, the person behind his move to Ferrari might be fired from his position as well. Finally, the 72-year-old concluded that Ferrari had too big a stage to make emotional decisions in favor of the Briton.
Hamilton’s great glory days are over. It’s not going to get better. If he doesn’t retire, whoever made the decision to bring him there may end up being fired. This is too big a stage to make emotional decisions rule teams.
Derek Daly added.
Derek Daly claims Lewis Hamilton isn’t going to ‘win the world championship again’
Lewis Hamilton couldn’t become a common visitor to the victory lane, as his best finish in the 2025 season was only a P4 finish. Derek Daly strongly believes that the 41-year-old isn’t going to have a miraculous revival of performance in Formula 1. Moreover, Daly felt sad seeing Hamilton being speechless during interviews following a disappointing outing on track.

Derek Daly asserted that the current state was indeed sad, both for Lewis Hamilton and his fans. Though Hamilton had undying motivation and willpower, it wasn’t good enough to help him achieve results on track. Daly boldly highlighted that he could not see the seven-time champion win a driver’s title ever again in his F1 career.
It’s not going to get better. He’s not going to suddenly get faster, and it’s sad for me to see the struggles that he has publicly and the interviews that he has now where he just nods his head says ‘yay or nay’. That’s sad to see for a seven-time world champion, but this is not going to get better. Hamilton is not going to win the world championship again.
Derek Daly noted.
The 2026 season will introduce new regulations, which could shake things up for Lewis Hamilton. He will finally be able to move on from the ground-effect era and start afresh in 2026. The new regulations might be the Hail Mary for Hamilton, as he will not have any other options after a disastrous outing in the coming season.
