The Mercedes Formula 1 team has surprisingly been on the rise at the pinnacle of motor racing. After enduring a few tough campaigns in the ongoing ground-effect era, the outfit is well and truly back and has already amassed three victories this year.
Lewis Hamiton brought the shutter down on the first half of 2024 with a win at Spa-Francorchamps. Moreover, considering how hectic the first 14 races were against the lights of Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari, Hamilton feels the second half will also be fiercely contested between the top four teams.
Mercedes is currently in fourth place in the constructors’ standings.
It’s really fantastic, I think, for the sport to be having such close teams and drivers. The pedigree of drivers at the top today is really elite and amazing. We didn’t expect to be competing with the McLarens or the Red Bulls at this point in the season, with how we started off. So for us to now have closed up, it’s going to be one hell of a second half of the season for sure.Lewis Hamilton via RaceFans
The 39-year-old via his comments, has indicated that the Brackley-based team will give its all, trying to close the gap to the top teams. Mercedes has so far amassed 266 points and is quite a way back from Ferrari (345) which is in third position.
Toto Wolff claims Lewis Hamilton was on the ‘right’ strategy in Spa
Hamilton won the 2024 Belgian GP but it was clouded by a bit of controversy. George Russell was the one who crossed the chequered flag first making a one-stop strategy work, but was later disqualified, in turn handing the victory to Hamilton who had initially ended his race in second.
A lot was said about the whole fiasco at Spa-Francorchamps, and Wolff recently insisted that the two-stop strategy for Hamilton was the right call.
We had to think about the cars behind us and they all logically made a two-stop, so it just wasn’t an option. What we did with Lewis was absolutely the right choice. That a one-stop was possible was not foreseeable. If it had been, every other top team would have done it.Toto Wolff via Silverarrows.net
The 2024 F1 season is currently in its summer break and keeping in view everything that has been discussed, the remaining 10 races of the year will be must-see events. The W15 is on the rise and from Zandvoort onwards, the target for Hamilton and Co. will be to amass as many victories as possible with strong points finishes at every race.
