Formula 1 recently announced a shocking rule change for the historic Monaco GP. The F1 community has complained about the track being too stagnant and boring to drive around, with little to no racing action many times over the years. To tackle this, a mandatory two-stop strategy is set to debut this year. Now Lewis Hamilton has taken credit for the rule change.

Multiple drivers including Max Verstappen were critical of driving around the Monaco GP due to the lack of racing action. Lewis Hamilton pointed out that the recently introduced two-stop strategy was his idea originally. The 40-year-old highlighted that he had suggested this change on team radio for many years. Hamilton believed that the Monegasque circuit required at least two stops to make the race interesting.

I’m pretty sure that was my idea anyways. But if you go back and look at some of the transcripts of previous years, I’ve been mentioning the two-stop for years. I think Monaco has to be at least a two-stop.

Lewis Hamilton told RacingNews365.com.

Hamilton noted that one-stop around the Monaco GP caused a lack of racing action at the forefront. The seven-time champion insisted that the circuit layout wasn’t the problem as the race had more to offer. Regardless, the Briton hoped for a better outing in Monaco this time around with the newly implemented rule change.

The one-stop was never really great. That [Monaco] Grand Prix is a great grand prix, but the race has more to offer in the race, hopefully. Maybe with more than one pit stop.

Lewis Hamilton expects the new rule to make the Monaco GP ‘more exciting’

Lewis Hamilton has remained successful in driving around the Monaco GP, claiming three victories in the past. However, Hamilton emphasized that the new rule wouldn’t fix all the issues. Rather, the 40-year-old speculated that the underlying issues of lack of overtakes would be improved by it.

That won’t fix it all. We’ll still see some of the issues of not overtaking and stuff, but I think it will make it more exciting. So I’m all for it.

The Monaco GP remains one of the most historic racing destinations and couldn’t be completely removed from the calendar.
