Lewis Hamilton clinched P3 at the Spanish GP, his first podium since the start of the 2024 season. During the post-race conference, Hamilton was asked how crucial it was for him to end his reign with Mercedes with a victory as he leaves for Ferrari next season.

Lewis Hamilton explained, that a win would be nice for him but that’s not the main focus for him right now. Hamilton last won a race in F1 way back at the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP. The Briton said the team is progressing slowly and their main goal is to stay consistent and earn more points. He highlighted the importance of maintaining consistency in upcoming races. Currently, the seven-time world champion and Mercedes focus on bringing more consistent performances just like in Barcelona.

It would be nice… But considering where we’ve come from I think just having consistency, and seeing if we can put the team further up in the points, I think it’s got to be the target. Right now let’s just try and have more consistent weekends like this and then we’ll see.

Further in the conversation, Hamilton explained George Russell in Montreal probably should have won. The Briton reckoned that qualifying in a better position would have given him a chance to win too. The seven-time world champion is optimistic about the upcoming races and hopes they can get closer to the front runners and challenge them more.

You would say that maybe Montreal. George probably should have won that one, but, if I had qualified where I feel I should’ve, there was potential there as well. We’ll see in the next few races. I’m hoping that we’re able o to eke a little bit closer to them and give them a bit more trouble

Lewis Hamilton mentioned the team’s performance is improving gradually. He acknowledged, that they were fast on the same track last year, so this year’s result should be considered cautiously. They have been very competitive in recent races. The seven-time world champion reckoned the team has reduced the performance gap with their rivals. However, he pointed out there is still a need to improve, especially in finding a bit more speed to become more competitive.

We’re slowly slowly getting closer. Last year we were very fast here, so you have to take [the result] with a pinch of salt but obviously the last couple of races we’ve also been relatively competitive. I think we have closed the gap a little bit, but we still have a good couple of tenths to try and find.
Lewis Hamilton added

Certainly, Lewis Hamilton expressed his true feelings on a top 3 finish after so long and thanked his team who worked very hard in the background. Fans were very pleased to see Hamilton back on the podium. They hope he maintains this consistent performance throughout the season and bids farewell with his last victory at Mercedes.
