Red Bull is known for the ruthless handling of its driver line-ups in Formula 1. Many expected that Sergio Perez was finally going to be axed after yet another woeful stint this year. However, Milton Keynes seemed to have changed its mind at the last moment, resulting in a new problem for its driver pool.

Perez’s failure to match Max Verstappen in the past several races has impacted the team heavily in the Constructors’ battles. The Mexican driver has only scored 28 points in the last eight races, the lowest amongst the top 8 drivers. Moreover, Red Bull no longer has the pace to tolerate such woeful results anymore.

Max Verstappen has now gone winless for four consecutive races, the first time since 2020. However, despite Red Bull’s faltering position in the pecking order. It is Red Bull junior Liam Lawson who might be the biggest loser from this decision.

Liam Lawson loses chance for F1 seat yet again

Liam Lawson is perhaps the most promising talent in Red Bull’s driver program. The Kiwi driver surpassed all expectations when he subbed in for Daniel Ricciardo last year. However, Lawson was left without a race seat for 2024, with many hoping that he could get a chance if Perez was sacked after the Belgian GP.

Unfortunately, that has not been the case. As Perez’s stay has been secured seemingly till the end of this season, Liam Lawson has lost the chance to race for RB. While Daniel Ricciardo was likely to take over Checo’s seat alongside Verstappen.

Liam Lawson has not publicly commented on his future as of yet. The Kiwi driver would be disappointed as he once again misses out on a race seat. Although, it is likely that Red Bull could try to give him a seat for 2025 if Perez is finally axed at the end of the season.

Certainly, Red Bull would be trying to keep Liam Lawson away from trying to find a seat at rival teams for next season. The F1 driver market still has a few spots open for next year. As such, it remains to be seen how things pan out for Lawson in the coming months.
