Red Bull has failed to find an ideal teammate for Max Verstappen ever since Daniel Ricciardo left the team in 2019. Sergio Perez has remained inconsistent at Milton Keynes, which has dropped the team to third in the standings. Now, former F1 driver Mark Blundell has reckoned that RB’s Liam Lawson could be the best bet for the Austrian giant.

Lawson was called up after the Singapore GP to replace Daniel Ricciardo for the remainder of the 2024 season. Red Bull is yet to announce its future plans for the Kiwi driver. However, Perez’s disastrous stint indicates that Liam Lawson could race alongside Max Verstappen in 2025.

Blundell highlighted that having a new generation driver would take Red Bull forward in the long-term. Moreover, the 58-year-old claimed that Liam Lawson would keep Verstappen honest and push the three-time world champion as teammates. As such, Mark Blundell would prefer to see the Kiwi driver take Checo’s seat for next season.

I think that the next generation of talent will help me drive the team forward and get the best out of my other driver who is a world champion and keep him honest. I’d lean towards putting Lawson in that car.

Mark Blundell urges Red Bull to ‘question’ Sergio Perez’s results

Perez is having another difficult season this year. The 34-year-old had a terrible weekend at his home race, where he even had an incident with Lawson. Mark Blundell emphasized that if he was Christian Horner, he would question the inconsistency in results of the Mexican driver.

If I was sitting there as team principal at the moment, I’d have to be questioning the results that I’m getting consistently from Perez.

Mark Blundell noted

Certainly, Sergio Perez’s lackluster performances have impacted Red Bull’s title prospects. Milton Keynes simply cannot afford to lose places in the standings because of one driver’s inconsistency. As such, fans can expect to see Christian Horner and Helmut Marko make a bold call on the driver line-up for the 2025 season.
