Formula 1 drivers and the FIA have been at a standoff since the 2024 season. The sports governing body has escalated tensions following a new rule. Now, F1 Presenter Martin Brundle has expressed his support for the controversial change for this season.

The FIA has implemented a new rule which could potentially penalize drivers with a race ban for criticizing the governing body. This comes amidst heavy backlash from drivers including Max Verstappen over a ban on swearing in the paddock.

Brundle claimed that everyone in Formula 1 is a role model. He insisted that he didn’t feel that it was correct for drivers to swear in press conferences, no matter the adrenaline after an on-track battle. Martin Brundle further pointed out that sportspersons in Rugby manage to respect the referee despite fierce action on the field.

I think we’re role models, F1 drivers are role models. You don’t need to gratuitously swear in a press conference… I don’t personally, it doesn’t feel right to me. What I love about rugby is how they respect the referee, and I think F1 should be the same.

Max Verstappen set wrong ‘example’ for younger generations

Moreover, the F1 presenter pointed out that the 20 drivers on the grid are examples for the future generation. He recalled Max Verstappen’s ‘stupid idiot’ remark on race control following a 10-second penalty in Abu Dhabi. Brundle highlighted that this becomes a wrong exam for junior drivers.

You’re role models for all the drivers coming through. So if you’re dirty on track, or you’re cheating the track limits, or calling the FIA stewards ‘stupid idiots’ to give you one example.

Martin Brundle noted

Certainly, the FIA has divided opinions with its actions in the past twelve months. F1 drivers remain on edge when it comes to easing tensions with the sports governing body. Though, no one has yet made any comments on the latest rule change in this controversial situation.
